Film Study: Clemson front 7 w/ Kevin Steele

I have been reviewing his defense at Clemson and I really liked what I saw. He used multiple fronts to confuse the Quarterbacks here are some clips of the looks against Auburn in 2010, Where he held Auburn to 24 points in regulation (Same as Chavis)
In this one he is using a 3-4 and something that I saw a lot from muschamp at Florida, The pass rushing OLB goes to the inside and the DE/DT Hybrid moves to the outside and quickly gets to Cam Newton. During the game the announcer constantly praised Kevin Steele.

Later in the game (Auburn has not had a 1st down yet) he uses a 4-3 and just does a normal cover 3 and forces an incompletion.

2011 vs FSU I Saw him use a 5 man front with ROLB-DE-NT-DT-LOLB and the LOLB drops into coverage and the DE moves to the other side of the nose tackle and goes after the quarterback.

These are just some of the things that I thought were interesting. There are a lot more but I just thought to share some.
ETA: He also used many different coverages instead of just a 2 deep safety and man to man like chavis

It also looks like what Ed Orgeron has been doing at USC with is d-line. Good stuff.

the only thing i dont like is that it looks like both plays the defensive ends lost containment.

The DEs rushed up field and got after the QB and the DTs disengaged and chased the QB down on that. I don't think that's a good example of losing containment. I think if we played Bain at DE we would definitely have that problem though.

I can't wait to see our pass rush this year, I think bain will play in 3-4 packages and neal in 4-3

I agree. Steele and Orgeron seem to like to rush the passer and stop the run along the way. Guys that haven't made much noise at all will be shooting up draft boards probably. And my gosh, we'll finally get to see Beckwith rushing the QB.

Good work OP, I'm looking forward to the year.

Man that shite is beautiful. Great breakdown as well. Can't wait to see how he implements this here. The future is bright!

Beckwith will be the first MLB off the board and an All-American with Steele. I loved Steele's Inside Linebackers at bama he has gotten a lot of production out of them and the NFL has loved them.

I really feel like Teuhema, Clark, and Debo are going to thrive this year. Those are my break out players

Sione Teuhema is one of my favorite players. He can play the Rushing OLB very well because he can also drop in coverage like he did in highschool. Very versatile.

Well if I can pick three plays from anyone who has ever coached a day in his life I can find three good plays.

I'll gladly do a further review with more plays to prove it... like I said I only posted some of the many plays

I'm a huge fan of using more versatile LBers who can play coverage ball in a "5 man front".
If you've got two guys who are close to the LOS with one of your OLBs covering it's basically like a man coverage 4-3 or a 4-2-5.
And it's really easy to swap personnel for running defense without changin a formation. Save for his one (big) gaffe, I think Steele has a solid resume. And the combination of him and Ed O wa da home run IMHO

Coach O likes Bain at that DE position so we're going to have to trust that he's doing it the right way and will be able to do the job effectively.
