That line you have highlighted tells us what we need to know. No one who owns a weapon, or is around them much, would phrase it that way. Semi-Auto when rapidly fired from multiple weapons, sounds like full auto to someone who has never experienced it. Plus, as I said before, 100 rounds sounds like 500.
I think he just drastically overestimated from inexperience with weapon fire.

I believe him. Just thought it was funny that the shooter was reported dead right after he said 1000 rounds were fired
Eta: what the guy likely heard was a bevy of law enforcement personnel emptying their magazines into the gunman.
