Federer has won the most grand slam tournament titles (18).

He has reached the most finals (29).

He has reached the most semifinals (42).

He has reached the most quarterfinals (50).

He is the only man to reach each final at least five times.

Laver has more "majors" 20 if you count the tournaments he won as a pro

200 tournament titles

2 calendar grand slams (one each in amateur and open eras)

6 titles in doubles (3 are mixed)

Laver was barred from playing "Majors" for 6 years in his prime for being a "professional"

So looking at his "major" tournaments, 6 of his majors were before he turned pro, 9 were as a pro, and 5 were in the open era.

Now I'm not a tennis historian, but wouldn't the 15 majors before the open era be a little less impressive since players were split between the amateur and pro and the fields were diluted a bit? If so, then those major should heavy a lower weighting.

No because the Majors were only open to amateurs until the Open era. Laver was instrumental in forming the ATP which got players more prize money. Think of it as Laver was a US hoops player pre 1992. Couldn't compete in Olympics but the rest of countries could send their pros to them.

That was biggest reason for his calendar slams being so far apart.

Yes, but winning a major was easier if professionals were excluded. And winning one of the "Profesional majors" was also easier because amateurs were excluded, and it looks like the fields were much smaller.

So what I'm saying is that because of the setup, I think it's fair to count the amateur and professional majors. That being said, they should be less heavily weighted than majors in the open era.

There were no professionals though until the split. The initial pros are what we call champions tour then the top players left to form the ATP

That is the way I always understood the explanation

Mac said 10 years ago Fed was the GOAT.

So have all the other tennis greats.

Why wouldn't he be?

It's between Fed and Sampras and Fed is a way better all-around player.

(And Nadal is suspect) That Spanish doping system going back to Miguel Indurain.

Pisses me off the Spain is being totally ignored and getting a pass for it's institutionalized doping programs - ala East Germany - while the US is the devil because of Lance.

and he did all that while mostly overlapping the greatest clay specialist ever

A big chunk of his career he only had 3 majors he could win.

Looking like Cilic +400, Fed -550.

SMS makes good points about Laver. When you rank players, I think you have to focus on open era. Laver is such a special case. He got screwed due to the amateurism thing, but he was also playing three majors on grass. I have no idea about the other great Aussies like Rosewall or prehistoric guys like Tilden and Budge.

I swear, watching highlights of Federer's match today, he looks as good now as he ever has. He is unbelievable. And I am so thankful to be alive during his reign. We're watching history.

Hopefully they meet at the US Open so Nadal can finish off his career grand slam of beating Roger at every major.

I always think man Federer is doing great considering how old he is...then realize he's 10 months younger than me.
