Five years ago, Travis Kalanick launched a startup called UberCab in San Francisco.
Fast forward a few years and Kalanick's company, now just called Uber, is now one of the most lucrative in Silicon Valley.
Uber operates in 311 cities in 58 countries, and it could be worth as much as $50 billion.
Thanks to that sky-high valuation, Kalanick made Forbes' list of the world's billionaires, where the 38-year-old serial entrepreneur is said to have a net worth of about $5.3 billion.

Uber has raised $5.9 billion at a $41 billion valuation. The company's recent valuation would make Kalanick a multibillionaire. A rumored new funding round of $1.5 billion to $2 billion would value the company at $50 billion, making it the most valuable privately held tech company in the world.
quote:
Thanks to Uber's sky-high valuation, Kalanick himself is a paper billionaire. This year, Kalanick — along with uber cofounder Garrett Camp and early Uber employee Ryan Graves — made Forbes' list of the world's billionaires for the first time. Cofounders Kalanick and Camp have a larger stake in the company than Graves does, which explains their larger net worths ($5.3 billion each, as opposed to Graves' $1.4 billion)

I wish just once, just once, one of my stupid easy arse ideas could make it big. That way I could throw away this useless college education and day to day office grind and live the american dream!
Yeah...I'm hatin!

You have to applaud these guys' initiative and willingness to take a risk. Lots of folks would never have guessed that Uber as conceived would be so successful.

True. But, it's not like he was working a cubicle job, had an idea, and became a millionaire. It says he was involved with many failed projects from the start and dropped out of school. Also filed bankruptcy at one point due to failures and was collecting a government check. Eventually he did strike it big, but I mean the guy was persistent.

And that's what it takes.
And in the app business, failure usually is the end game.
Not only do you have to have the brilliant idea, you have to come up with a platform and format for people to use it. Then you have to actually be found by the people who would use your app. All of this has to happen before someone comes along with a similar idea, and there are LOTS of people trying to get into the app game.

I still don't "get" Uber or what's so great about it over a traditional Taxi service.

I thought I read in the last few years that Uber is operating at a loss

used uber when lsu played in houston. from the stadium back to the houstonian was $265. we had no choice, it was either that or wait in line about 400 people deep at one in the morning for a taxi.

It's usually cheaper than a cab. That is what some people are gunning for. People also say that they like the cleaner cars. I haven't ran into many of those lately, at least not from UberX.

Wouldn't be surprised, they're a very young and growing company. Amazon wasn't profitable over it's first decade, and still barely pulls a profit. These companies focus on growth rather than short term profitability.

Nope

quote:When I am in New York I feel like Uber is useless because there are cabs everywhere and the cab laws are strict as hell where you know they dont screw with the meter or "only accept cash". However, in cities like Nashville a cab is unreliable. You get in one and they charge whatever the hell they feel like and you have no clue what that might be. Uber is straight up and understood
