re: PSA: Flashing Red in all directions is treated as a 4-way Stop

Where are you getting your information for that statement? Flashing red/yellow intersections are still the norm. No reason to screw up an intersection by having a minor street and a major street treated the same.

While I manage a firm, I am a licensed engineer specializing in traffic operations.
I have designed hundreds of signals including coordinated timing plans........don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
While I agree in theory with not compromising major street approaches due to minor side streets, the typical driver today will still attempt to stop at the flashing yellow. Currently, DOTD, TxDOT, MDOT, ALDOT, GDOT, etc. all prefer all way flash operation when the conflict monitor activates or the system experiences a surge (I.e. lightening strike).

What's worse, is when the light is completely out and nobody treats it like a 4 way stop. People will see the light is out and just blow through that intersection. You've got to be some kind of daredevil to do that. Even if you are on a major road and the crossing road "should" be yielding to you, why does anyone take that chance. Especially when it's usually during terrible weather.

The worst part is if you try to go on a flashing yellow, someone will smash into you.

I always avoid blocking the intersection when I have a green light. Doesn't stop the assholes turning right on red, preventing me from ever making progress

some guy posted the other day in a thread titled "Things that irk you". He said "People that do not stop at flashing yellow lights" --
This is the OT, there are a lot of terrible drivers. The majority of those polled think it's okay to cruise in the left lane as long as you are doing the posted speed limit.

You can also turn left on red as long as it's a one way street.
* and there is not an option to continue on straight.

I've seen a few of these.

My problem with this is it's actually flashing "red" in all directions, how do you really know?
You don't. If it's flashing red for you, you stop. If it's clear, you can proceed. If it's not clear, you wait to see if crossing traffic stops, then proceed. It's not rocket science.

Except when you can see the lights for the cross street too. Or when you've already gone in that direction and seen them for yourself.
