Window tint for home windows

Mrs. ICS and myself are starting to get into the summer home improvement projects. Painting this week and next then we want to tint our home windows to try and reduce the solar heat, not black them out.
Our house sits east and west, so I suspect that we will see a great deal of improvement for fairly cheap.
The best companies that I have seen are 3M and SunTek. However, both appear to only sell their tint to installers, and not retailers. Does anyone on here have any recommendations or has anyone done this before?
I really like the 3M Prestige, 3M Night Vision, and SunTek ULVDS 50 series, but cannot find it for sale.

I had similar questions a few years ago. I think I bookmarked the thread. Let me see if I can find it

I had my West facing windows tinted. I believe they used 3M tint. They gave me a couple of options regarding solar, light etc. I picked the one that would reduce heat the most. The company that did my cars also did houses.

I wish someone with some knowledge on this subject would chime in. I have 4 large windows on the west end of my house and really hate closing the blinds in the late afternoon.

Forever, thanks. Ill take a look at the link in a minute.
I just remembered, Mrs. ICS had a company come give us a quote a few months ago. I think they even quoted us using the 3M, both series. She's trying to find the email now.
I am trying to do the math on just product cost. 16 windows that are at least 72"x32", some are 78"x36".
The window tint they sell at Home Depot is what my parents used years ago. It did not fade, but I dont think its specs are any good either.
Will update if Email quote is found.

Not sure where to purchase, but go ceramic. It blocks like 80 percent of the heat.

If I cannot get 3M or SunTek, it will be ceramic. I am not sure what the aforementioned brands are, but they are easily the most highly reviews out right now.

Just found the quote:
46 Panes, 250sq/ft
Prestige 40 = $2,895
Night Vision 25 = $2,095
Still havent figured how much in product it would cost me, give me a minute.

Freaking this. Black on black truck. Went from leather burning my legs to being comfortable getting in. TREMENDOUS difference, and that's without doing the windshield.

Not happy with how little the product cost.

3M makes ceramic, too.
On yachts we use very expensive ceramic ( $2k for like 10 sf) and its amazing. You don't have to spend that much, but ceramic, to me, is the best.

I am currently trying to find out if the difference between Night Vision and Prestige is worth it. Also, we are wanting to get another quote too. So, if anyone knows of a company or two in BR, please let me know.

I did it about a month ago. It's a pain in the arse.
Make sure you cut every edge perfectly straight with nothing hanging over the edge
Tape the top corners for a couple of days with green painter's tape
Soak the shite out of the window and film before you put the film on
Scrape the window with a razor blade and make sure it is 100% clean
Don't let the sticky side touch anything before you put it on
Soak the outside of the film before you use a flat plastic scraper to get the bubbles and extra liquid out
Then use the scraper covered with a very smooth rag to push harder
There will be a little bit of bubbles, but the sunlight should get rid of them after a couple of days
Basically soak the frick out of everything (dripping on the floor wet), cut perfectly straight edges, and expect it to want to come off

I used the Gila in our master bedroom. It sits on the southeast corner of our house and was always noticeably warmer than the rest of the house. We get early morning sun that peaks through trees right into the back of the house and into the bedroom, plus being on the south side as well means that it always gets sun. I have a large window on the east side and two smaller windows on the south side. The south side is right next to our driveway. I put the Gila film on all of the windows in our master BR and it had an immediate effect. Also, the film is not noticeable from the road, only when you pull into the driveway and drive up next to the master br can you tell that is has the film. It's been on the windows for about 3yrs and has held up well. Plenty of "how to" videos on Youtube.

Mine (gila) is basically mirror tint because my sun room is just straight windows all around. I'd say it lowered inside temps by 10-15° during the day. Can't see inside during the day either, which I like

Hammer, thanks. I have done lots of vehicle windows, but have used a friends shop to do them. From yard sticks to plexiglass, the right tools make all the difference. This is why I am considering paying someone $2,100 to do it. I know how quickly it can get fudged up.
GC, thanks. If I do it myself, I will use Gila. The reviews are good, but more important, I cannot get anything cheaper.

$2,100?!? How long do you think it will take to make that up in savings?
