Are burials wasteful?

Should we just cremate everybody? Seems like it would take up less usable space.

Yep. At what point do we bury an entire old cemetery.

Makes sense to me. Cheaper and you can keep that loved one any where you want. Also during all this flooding you don't have to worry about uncle Bobby hauling arse down main st. In his floating casket.

My family has always cremated.
All the expense to bury is / was an outdated money - maker for the church.

These tombs are a reminder of the selfish assholes that came before us. Many believed a mythical God was going to take their physical bones and put flesh on them again as they walked on earth and/or heaven. Never mind that God has to go through unmarked tombs, pick up hundreds of pounds of cement and pull their arse 6 feet under the ground. I would be pissed off.

Some of my older family members have started choosing this option....and it seems logical to me.

Burn my arse or feed me to sharks. Doesn't matter to me.

No personal choice, where one size fits all is the mark of communism.
Having choices is the mark and way of a better, freer society.
Let those who chose to honor the dead do so how they want. Say what you want but a well done funeral service is carthartic and even life affirming. Family ties are strengthened by a traditional wake & service in a way no incineration quite pulls off.
Hopefully people will repect you enough and for those you leave behind to come to your funeral. You can't imagine the devastation of a family where no one bothered to come to the funeral. That's tragic.

My GF has lost both her parents. Her mother requested cremation and no funeral. Her father had a traditional funeral (with military honors) and burial. Both were very difficult for her to bear, but the traditional customs of her father's service were very comforting to her. Take that FWIW.

A burial with no coffin would nourish the earth.
The airtight coffins intrigue me. I can't imagine what a body is like laying in one of those. Must be ghastly.

Burn me, have a beer in my name, and get on with your life.
