Mistborn is good.

Also check out Red Rising.

Another book Scruffy would recommend, if you can find a copy of it, is Villains by Necessity by Eve Forward. Copies are hard to find though.

The quest By Nelson demille. Written at the start of his career in the 70s but completely rewritten a couple of years ago. About a trio of war correspondents in Africa during the fall of Halle sellasiie. Sex jealousy the Vatican hidden monestaries in the jungle crucifixions castrations What could go wrong. Well written to boot. Sounds like what you are looking for.

Check out Lev Grossman, The Magician series.
Its like Harry Potter in college/ Narnia crossover.
