i am a snapper fishing newb. we have a camp at cocodrie, have for 10 years, but i only make it down 3-4 times a year.
a few of us were running down this weekend to hit some trout and reds. but another friend of mine will be down there snapper fishing and offered for us to follow him out.
this is an intriguing offer and i'd like to give it a shot. but i don't have a clue what tackle is really necessary to do it.
so before i commit to all this, what would i be getting myself into??
i don't have a problem picking up extra tackle and hardware.
i've snapper fished before, but on a guided trip years back.
give a newb some tips!

weight, circle hook, pogie. drop line, profit. Like fishing in a barrel.

Assuming you are just snapper fishing and will only do so a couple of times a year, you can go 1 of 2 routes: either oversized spinning gear or small conventional reels. The spinning gear is nice and fool-proof for people with not enough fishing acumen to avoid backlashes on conventional reels. The conventional reels are more bullet-proof though.
You can spend anywhere from $150/set-up to $500/set-up just depends on how much you want to get into it from a money standpoint. Hardware wise, you need 8-12oz egg sinkers and circle hooks.

This. Some of the easiest fishing you can do.

Buy a nice reel and a cheap rod. Drop down and wait until the elusive Red Snapper hooks himself. Reel up, repeat, go home.

Yep. We got into them yesterday outta Galveston after not getting a bite trying to troll for a while.
These 3 were nice sized, foot for reference

Have you been perch fishing? It's the same thing without a cork and bigger tackle.
Cheap rod and reel that can hold sufficient amount of 30lb line. Egg weight above a 3'-4' leader. Small circle hook on the end. Cut pogie or squid as bait. Bury the hook (try to hide it), and drop down to bottom. Reel in 10' wait a minute, reel in 10 more feet and wait, continue until your back at surface. If you don't get bites after a 20 minutes, hit another rig. Stay on the down current side. I wish I remembered the depths we fish out of Cocodrie, but it's slipping my mind. You don't have to go all that far past the islands.
Bring the right air bladder tools and offshore landing permits. It's so easy it's not even fun to do by itself (unless you are good at finding mangroves). You have to pair it with a speck trip or something. Load the boat with people so the fuel burned is worth the 2 fish per person limit (on reds)

I brought an old Ambassador on a 7' redfish rod with 30# power pro onto a buddies boat one time just for shites and giggles. Talk about a fight once I hooked a snapper after the 2oz sinker finally got the pogey down! Like hooking a 10lb catfish on an ultralight while brim fishing.

The rigs I am bringing tomorrow are ambassadeur SX7700 cl reels with 80 lb braid on penn tuna sticks. The reels are on the light side but should get the job done until i can replace them. I inherited them from my father. A penn 330gti is up to most bottom fish you will encounter and is pretty cheap. I also have two fin nor lethal 100 spinning reels on penn blue water carnage jigging rods that i am bringing along.

Mine are rigged with 3-4 oz weights. Plenty enough for less than 200 ft of water as long as the current isn't ripping. When you get to those 3-4 knt offshore currents 8-12 oz is needed.

Pull up next to an off shore platform ...
Throw a castnet into the water...
Enjoy
It's stupid how many are out there.

So do I spend $60 on an ugly stick tiger or get the $20 tournament choice. Lol
I'm looking at doing a penn 309 with an ugly stick tiger.
