there's also a lot of actors who show up as side characters in both shows. The shows are very similar in humor style
There were three shows on Fox, ABC, and NBC that all started around the same time, Happy Endings, Traffic Light (I think), and Perfect Couples. I think every person from all three of those shows has made it to New Girl as a guest star.

I thought winston was great in much of what I saw from him this past season.

I haven't seen the new season yet

Just skip the entire first season of Parks and Rec.

Zooey Deschanel is the worst part of that show. Once they realize their bread is buttered by Jake Johnson (Nick) and Max Greenfield (Schmidt), sprinkled with a light dusting of Lamorne Morris' (Winston) oddities, the show becomes better. I actually can't stand Zooey Deschanel in pretty much anything she does, but she is carried by the others. After season 1, the show is hilarious.

He left New Girl after filming the pilot, which I think is done way before the rest of the season, to do a different show that also started that same year. He chose the wrong show. That other show apparently sucked and got cancelled pretty quickly, so he was left without any job.
You shut your whore mouth. Happy Endings was fricking gold and lasted 3 seasons. Hardly "pretty quickly."
Jackass.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I haven't seen the show (and because that seems to be a popular opinion).
He is wrong. Damon Wayans Jr. is gold in everything, including New Girl, particularly after he settles in with the cast and moves away from the loud, overcompensating guy to become a real person.
Lamorne Morris is great, though.
As for Parks & Rec, do not watch Season 1. It will honestly turn you off the show. I tried to bull through it and couldn't. As a result, I stopped watching that show for over two years before picking up on Season 2, which still starts bad, but by episode 6 or so really finds out what it is.

I'm assuming he will come back and give Schmidt his deserved praise.

That other show Damon was on was Nappy Endings and it's one of the best sitcoms ever IMO. It was a shame it got canceled. New Girl is really good and I still watch it but Happy Endings was better for the humor I like most.
You can buy the DVDs for Happy Endings although I'm not sure if they ever released the final season on DVD (season 4 I think.)

Okay, so I am halfway through S3 at this point. I'm still liking the show a lot, but I absolutely can't stand that Nick and Jess are together.
Coach is firmly back now, and I am liking it. I had heard that the show suffers from him coming back, but I really think that has everything to do with Nick and Jess dating than Coach being back.
Nick has to be one of my least favorite sitcom characters of all time. There's almost nothing likeable or redeemable about him as a person, yet he wins over the cute, nerdy, hot girl in less than two seasons? Doesn't make sense. Not to mention that the show was great when she was dating different dudes and figuring things out (Justin Long was great on the show).
Still not a huge fan of Winston, but I've come around on Schmidt...he's great. I thought it was a little ridiculous that he couldn't choose between CeCe and Elizabeth, especially after hanging around Elizabeth for all of about two seconds. But that's whatever...Schmidt is awesome.
Does anybody know when S4 will be available to watch on NF? Also, when the new season starts coming back on?
Also, one thing I've noticed is how much the show focuses on (and talks about) sex. It's almost strange how often that is the sole purpose of things. It's hilarious.
