Wife and I are headed to the beach this weekend, wouldn't mind trying to catch some stuff. No clue what to use out there, any ideas? What can you typically catch from the shore if anything?

Also, always see people at the beach at night with lights wading, are they giggin flounder? if so is that pretty easy? never done it.

Get a large blow-up float that looks like a tractor tire. It should have 2 drink holders--put daiquiris in the holders. Get a box of beef stick. Take a Ronco pocket fisherman. Float out way too far and drop your line with some beef stick on the hook. Eat some beef stick. Wear sunscreen and a floppy hat. Enjoy!!!

You can find out if pompano are around by snorkeling just in front of the first bar. if so, catch sand flees and rig like a drop shot. Only real "success" I've had in that part of Fl. is lady fish and hard tails with an occasional blue.

Screw the beach, go to the jetties at St. Andrews State Park.

Are you bringing poles or not? The last time we went to PCB, we brought trout poles and went to the jetties. Caught some Spanish Macks, a few Reds, and a Bonita. All on artificials with a leader. I would guess you could go get some bait and catch all kinds of shite though.

I'm glad you asked, I was about to. Taking some teens to Laguna beach the 12th-15th. Several want to fish, so we are taking gear down. The teen who wants to fish the most is going slow about getting the info we need on whats in season and such though.

I want to say that we caught most of our fish on the tried and true, gold spoon.

There is a dude that posts occasionally over on BCKFC that spends a fair amount of time in the summer fly fishing the surf of mirimar beach. If you can get him to sit still long enough he's a bottomless pit of information. There are also some grass flats in the bay that are accessible on foot. I know he catches a lot of pompano and a lot of big red fish sight casting from the beach.

The biggest thing is getting away from the people. If you want to be productive, you are going to have to get away from the crowds.

I've caught flounder in the surf in Gulf Shores and Orange beach, dont imagine PCB is any different. Rig soft plastic with appropriate jig head for the conditions, bounce on bottom.

Live shrimp at the jetties will yield good results.

Lots of mangroves and redfish around the jetties

Surf fishing is hit or miss this time of year. Whiting is your most probable catch in the surf with sharks mixed in.

under a cork or without one? on a leader?

99% of the time I'm a bass fisherman, don't know a ton about saltwater

I still don't have a yak unfortunately, will have one in a couple months though (but I've been saying that for 2 years so who knows)

With a mono or fluorocarbon leader. Fish on the bottom with a circle hook. Just cast out into the pass or the gulf side towards the end of the jetties.

You're gonna lose hooks on the rocks, just be prepared for that.

Dead shrimp works too.

Source: lived there for 6 years.

If you aren't in a boat the jetties is the best place to catch fish there. I've seen 30+ pound grouper caught at the jetties. Its a mixed bag out there and a lot of fun. Keep an eye on your bait in he rocks though, the raccoons and Pelicans on the jetties don't have any fricks to give

if I get live shrimp from a bait shop, will they come in something to keep them alive or do I need to bring a bait bucket?

went to academy last night, bought some swivels, hooks, corks, will tie up my leaders tonight. Also bought a couple gold spoons and some jig heads and plastic cocahoe's, should be good to go huh?

You will need to bring your own bait bucket for live shrimp. Fishing the jetty is tuff, but doable. For the surf I would just use a pompano jig. Get the 3/8-1/2oz size so you can cast past the breakers. You stand a better chance of catching a pompano. Otherwise it's beaucoup ladyfish. If you go to St Andrews State Park you might have better luck on the inlet side over by the boat launch. It's more of a speckled trout/red fish spot. Early in the morning or late in the evening if you are serious about catching something to eat.
