re: Most Turbulent Flight You've Experienced?

This wasn't turbulence but it freaked people out. I was on a smaller regional jet from Panama City to Atlanta. Clear skies, smooth flight, and the oxygen masks dropped about 15 minutes away from our destination.
Pilot and flight attendants were calm and most people kept it together. They had a malfunction or something. There were a handful of people absolutely losing their shite though . I couldn't imagine already being scared of flying and have that happen.

Worst turbulence 2 yrs ago flying AA from Japan to US. Somewhere ENE of Japan over Pacific we suddenly hit some really choppy air that racked and rocked the plane for what seemed like forever. Attendant fell to the floor. My wife helped her back up. EVERYBODY inside was quiet and scared. The worst of it went no more than 5-10 minutes, but bumps and jolts kept going for about 20-30 min after. No fun.
Sounds like we were on the same plane. had an identical experience around the same time. whenever I fly over the pacific I usually hit some chop seemingly out of nowhere over the middle of the ocean.

I assume there are just some powerful wind currents over the Pacific?

Not sure where I was going, think Colorado about 17 years ago, but I loved flying more than anything. Hit a bad storm and experienced almost all the movements a jet is capable of making in mid air. Never have enjoyed flying as much since then.

I was on the flight that came in right after this one. We hit the same turbulence but had a little more notice. The flight attendants were crying.
Pretty crazy seeing all of the emergency equipment on the runway as you land.

Would have lost my shite.
Whenever there is bad turbulence, I just look at the flight attendants and if they are calm, I am calm.
I have never seen them freak out. If I saw them crying, I would go into straight panic mode I think.

Flying from Japan onto my aircraft carrier on a COD (propeller plane usually used to deliver mail), im not sure if the pilot was messing with us or it was just rough, but right after takeoff he put us in a pretty steep dive for a while, probably like 30 seconds. The whole flight was bumpy as hell then we banked really hard around the carrier and started to land. We touched down on the carrier then as I was expecting us to come to an immediate stop, we didn't, just kept on going... felt drop off the edge of the flight deck, then he gunned it again and we started gaining altitude. We missed the wire, which I know now is really common, but had no idea at the time. Got it on the second pass, pretty crazy how fast that thing stops once you touch down.

First prize: Baton Rouge to Atlanta sometime in the mid 90s. Weather was fine leaving, but there was some godawful weather around Atlanta and the ride started getting really nasty over mid-Alabama or so. Had one of those instances where the plane smacked downward so hard anybody unbelted would have hit the ceiling. A woman with a German-sounding accent next to me was just about to shite her pants. Only time I've ever puked on a plane. As Atlanta came into view you could see these gnaryly-arse black clouds ahead of us with lightning coming out of them. At that point the pilot told everyone, frick this, we're going to land in Columbia, SC instead", where everyone ended up spending the night.
Second prize: on a Martha's Vineyard vacay about 10 yrs ago the last leg was in one of these tiny Cape Air puddle jumpers from Providence, RI to MV. It seated literally 6 or 7 people. When the pilot wanted to seat us a certain way that took into consideration what everyone weighed, my "oh shite" radar went through the roof. The weather wasn't absolutely wretched but it was cloudy and rainy. At one point during the trip I swear the plane went into freefall, nose down, for what had to be 5-6 seconds or so. The pilot (right in front of me) didn't seem to be making any frantic movements or anything with his controls, and that was the ONLY thing that kept me from losing my shite.
We took the god damn ferry back to Providence when the vacation was over, blee dat!

There was a point when we dropped a long ways, I'm not a pilot so I can't guess how far, but when we finally caught it was like the whole plane was just dropped on concrete. I always keep my seat belt on if I'm sitting but several others weren't so lucky.
Needless to say, I was not very excited about my connecting flight 2 hours later.

Don't ever fly out of Denver in a blizzard where the snow is coming down sideways. The way I look at it though is if a plane can get through that shite without breaking in to pieces, then it would only have to be missiles that could bring down a plane....other than pilot error.

Flew from Dallas to New Orleans last night after a 4 hour delay due to the storms. We had to go north around the storm making it about a 3 hour flight that was bumpy the whole way. The flight attendants didn't even get up to serve drinks because turbulence. Thank god I always carry Xanax when I fly.

Which one of these was your flight?
Dang, that happened to me when I was on a plane to Vegas. Tried landing 3 times before we were finally able.

It doesn't matter how much I fly in my life, turbulence will always bother me.

Miami to Atlanta 2010, thought it was the end, have only flown once since. People screaming and crying and puking and that was just the 3 people on my row.

I spilled coffee all over my slacks when our MD-88 between BR and ATL at cruising altitude suddenly banked hard left and then corrected. Smooth flight other than that one kind of scary moment.
The pilot apologized for the one spot of rough air, but I suspect that his knee hit the yolk or something. I fly often and I've never experienced anything like that before or sense then.
Ice and peanuts flew everywhere. Unfortunately, my coffee was very hot. Got all over the British chick next to me too. Burned my leg and her arm a bit but nothing crazy.
I've had flights with a lot of turbulence but that was the one time when my stomach kind of turned and I think my heart skipped a beat. I thought we were going to fall out of the sky for a sec there. The poor saps who were not belted in flew a little bit. Someone banged their head on a wall and I think a flight attendant hit her head on one of the overhead bins or the ceiling.
Also back in 2008, we aborted a landing in Memphis right before touchdown because a tornado was rapidly approaching the airport (although they didn't tell us that at the time). It felt like the jet was going sideways before they decided to abort and loop around. CRJ jet. Some passengers claimed to have seen the funnel cloud but I couldn't see anything. When we finally landed, there didn't appear to be any damage at the airport, but there was a lot of insulation looking material on strewn about the runway.

dallas to Lafayette about 15 years ago, during the Spring. Turbulence was so bad that all drinks spilled on top of the overhead bins and proceeded to drip down on you. 3/4 of the passengers were barfing. A large woman across the aisle from me, broke out a pair of rosary beads and started praying, loudly! When the wheels touched the runway, everyone on the plane started clapping and cheering. Only time in my life that I've ever seriously thought that a plane I was on had a good chance of crashing.

New Orleans to Salt Lake City.
It's normally pretty turbulent in those last 40 minutes into SLC, but this one time it was into a storm. It was constant "light turbulence" with random sudden drops. First time in many flights that I really got worried.

Nothing too serious but last fall on a flight from Rome to London, I saw a fighter jet about 100 yards below our altitude, heading directly for us from our 2 oclock and my butthole tightened just a little bit until it passed beneath us.

Man, reading this thread made my palms a little sweaty. Flying is something I don't think I'll ever be able to be comfortable with. Props to some of you for dealing with these situations I just spent 20 minutes reading about.

I have had to do an emergency landing after the plane dropped like a lead weight. I have been in plenty turbulence but this time it was a dead drop. The engine fell out of the casing into someones back yard.
I no longer do planes that well. I tried to fly and get over my fear, more mishaps made it worse. I have to drink a lot of little vodkas.
