I have the rapala one from academy which i thought would be bad, but its average to good for small fish. Cutting something like a large red would be difficult

Black & Decker was the best I ever used. I don't know if they make that model anymore or not.

When we went fishing last year w/ Hackberry Rod & Gun Club I asked the same question of our guide. He said all they now use is Wal-Mart. His reasoning was none of the electric filet knives hold up very long so you might as well buy the cheapest around and replace it as needed.

I'm not cool or man enough for a fixed blade fillet knife.

I went back to regular knife after watching a guy with a knife clean more fish than me with my electric knife.

Dexters. Get two or three and an accusharp sharpener and keep them sharp. $50 tops for all three and the sharpener.

Yeah. He was doing it a little different than I had been doing. He cut through the trout starting behind his anus and cut up to the gills on both sides (he didn't cut through the backbone on the way up--just through the gut section0 and then went down the back like usual and flipped it to take it off the skin. Turn it over and filet it too. He got more meat than I was getting and he had it down and was fast.

I started doing that and I am not as fast yet because I am not fishing as much as I should!! I like it better though.

He did it like this guy does with his electric knife. LINK

I always just started behind the gills.

I do it the same way. Cut out the guts and then you're just left with the meat.

I guess I'll give the fixed blade a shot.

I fillet trout that way with my electric knife. With Reds I start from the tail and when I hit the ribs I cut across the top of the rib cage instead of through it then cut the filet from the fish. This leaves the guts and ribs intact with the carcass, the scales on for grilling and doesn't destroy your knife cutting through tough bones
