i have a few crazy thoughts about the children.
Maybe the big boy is Robert and the other boy with green eyes is Ned and the 12 year old boy is Brandon. But why would they need a flashback of those three at that age?

My immediate thoughts are Big Walder and Little Walder
ETA-Misread that it was 3 actors

I don't know if I'd describe Robert as "a clever boy".
That one is a bit of a head scratcher.
