Folly Beach & it's not even close.
Only a 15minute drive to downtown once you get off folly island.

Alcohol is illegal on the beaches but from what I understand they only enforce it when people are stupid about it. Pack some Solo cups.

what marshes are nearby for this to happen? this happened on my NC beach as well and it was on a beach near the sound side of the water leading to an island where they nest and therefore can swim across a sound easily.

everything (or a lot of it) between the beach front and charleston is marsh, from what i see on maps/etc ...

This. Just don't be out there with a glass bottle. Pour it in a cup and don't act like an idiot and you will be fine.

Important question: Where is the wedding/reception going to be?

Only illegal at Folly, not at IOP or Sullivans (I prefer both of those to Folly anyways)

agreed. was just wondering if a local knew where they were specifically nesting and hanging out. and how it is they do so well in salt water.

If that's the case, I would honestly suggest staying downtown as well.
There is tons to do and if you stay in the right area, lots of stuff is accessible by walking.
If you stay on the beach, you'll be doing a lot of driving to get to different places. Folly, where most people are suggesting, isn't that far from downtown, but it's still about 25-30 mins, and depending on the time of day, traffic can suck getting back and forth.
If the reception is downtown, then it's easy to get to bars and back to your hotel afterwards. No worries about having to drive or pay for cabs.
