Tell me about your experience on the Roatan Island, Honduras. Initially, very attractive that United flies direct from Houston. Wife and I looking to do dive focused vacation there in the next year.

Should we do a diving resort and be bound to the food that they have there, or is the local cuisine really good and we'd be missing that? Based on my research it looks like we probably want to stay in the West End area, any advice there is welcome too.

Most importantly, is it worth trying to go fishing for a day or two? What type of fishing did you do and what did you catch?

I will be there in June on a cruise (trashy) so it will only be for the day but I can report back what I see.

Great local food, and yes definately stay in West End. Lots of little eateries that you could get to easily with taxi or rental car and worth it.

Ask your dive master and boat captain about fishing and they can arrange a spontaneous, cheaper, and better offshore trip than you could get if you asked the concierge.

You must get the "Alert Diver" magazine - they had a big article on Roatan.

I live here half of the year, lots of Americans do. Rent a car and drive around the island. West end is really all tourists. Plenty of really cool spots on east end and north side of island.

Love Roatan! If you're a diver, they have awesome diving. I did a night dive and a shark dive there, which I consider to be two of my favorite dives of all time.

My dad and brother went one time and they fished, I think it was a pretty cool experience for them. But I don't think it was the best fishing of all time.

I'll have to ask my family the name of the place we stayed. It's been a few years. I'm pretty sure we dove with Bananarama and stayed down the beach? I know we did something with Bananarama. I think that's right. I'll check if I remember.

The shark dive was with another company though. They bring you down to this location with like 50 reef sharks swimming around and bring a chum bucket and the sharks go to town right in front of you. Pretty neato.

The night dive was right off the beach with Bananarama and you turn your flashlights off at one point and you can see the bioluminescent creatures glow in the dark. Awesome experience as long as you don't get nervous about swimming in the dark in open water.

Just google houses for rent in Roatan. Best thing to do is rent one and go and hang out in the local bars, you will meet people who can take you to neighboring islands for really cheap for day trips.

Ok, what are your food recommendations there? I saw you can get iguana on the black market, would eat.

We will probably do 5-7 nights there and 4-5 days of diving, so the diving resorts would be very conducive to what we want to do, but I am partial to local cuisine in any place we go and don't mind the extra work of finding them.

Only OT ballers can afford international travel. Stop trolling and see your way to Gulf Shores for your family vacations.

Stay as far away from the eastern part of the island as you can. The west part is beautiful. The eastern part has an extremely bad crime issue.

La sirena in camp bay is awesome. Lion fish ceviche is their big thing.
Bjs in oak ridge on. Friday for lunch.
Paya bay near camp bay is also fantastic, conch soup is great there.

There is also a ton of small taquerias and shops that have mainland Honduran food.

Also the crime thing on the east end is highly blown out of proportion. It usually is surrounded by drug trade, prostitution, or flashing cash.

I went there and Belize on a 7 day cruise out of New Orleans. I enjoyed the scuba diving on the reef.

West End Bay is a great beach. Tons of restaurants and bars on the beach. You can walk end to end on the beach in 10, maybe 15 minutes. That's where the condo we stay at is and as you can see it's right by the dock.

There are a few zip lining places on the island and a couple of eco-tour type excursions to do.

The true east end of the island only began to be developed and got electricity several years ago. The west end is much more developed but the power still goes out almost daily. Stay away from the main town which is Coxen Hole. From what I've seen it truly is a hole and there's no reason to go there. Plenty to do away from that town.

Lobster season starts on June 1 so if you eat on the island odds are you can get a lobster dinner for $15-18. It's not a very expensive island but rumor is that the prices go up on cruise ship days (Tuesdays and Wednesdays in June).
