Because we got rid of Chavis! Maybe Steele is the answer, and maybe he's not, but folks, "The Chief" was killing me with the 3rd & Chavis stuff and repeatedly going to a prevent defense in the 4th quarter. A lot of goofballs on this site want to hang the losses to BAMA in 2012 & 2014 on CLM, but those were all Chavis!

As far as 2011 goes, I now question how much the success of that Defense was based purely on talent rather than Chavis' coaching.

Good riddance!

The philosophy of not trying to pressure the quarterback needed to change too.

And Chavis' insistence on undersized LB's!

I think you could have run a monkey out there to coach our D in 2011 and he would have done an adequate job.
We always have the talent....but seem to shite the bed at the most inopportune times.

I agree. He is a good DC, but other coaches in this conference are familiar with his schemes at LSU. A new change isn't a bad thing, and Steele won't be giving up 70 this year.

If you can get passed the Orange Bowl nightmare and look at the stats, Steele had good defenses the rest of the three years he was DC at Clemson.

At least he has a more aggressive style, and will mix it up with the 3-4 front......

In six of our 11 losses the past three years, we either led or were tied in the final two minutes before our defense allowed the opponent to drive for the winning or tying score. In five of those six, we led or were tied in the final minute. In four of them, we led or were tied in the final five seconds.

Did he or did the talent he had on the field win games defensively? I can tell you his scheme late in the games(4th quarter mostly) single handily lost games. Big games at that!

Chavis

You take the good with the bad. Sure, Chavis had that strangely common coaching predilection of going conservative at the end, but he also had THE most successful defense in all the NCAA at stopping EVERY kind of offense.

He's a top-tier defensive coordinator as shown by the salary he commands from several well respected head coaches.

I liked the Steele hire even before Coach O was announced, so here's hoping he can build on the great tradition Chavis continued.

I am happy the Chief is gone. The only thing we need is an average QB!

Total Offense
2014 - 75th
2013 - 33rd
2012 - 77th

Total Defense
2014 - 8th
2013 - 15th
2012 - 9th

People put way to much emphasis on the end of the game. The fact of the matter is that our defense did not hold us back.

Kind of important when you have the lead and blow it in the end.

You need to be able to hold onto leads at the end of a game. It has been a consistent problem for LSU and the Saints.

People know that our overall defense has been good at LSU.

Also, LSU's defense in 2013 and 2014 weren't that good despite those stats. The defense got ripped apart against MSU, Auburn, and ND

In 2013, our defense held us back.

Also, total yard stats are dumb

Our scoring defense rankings were 12, 21, and 3. My point was in the grand scheme of things a last minute score to lose a game shouldn't be blamed on the defense when you only give up 13 points. I realize that wasn't the case for MSU and Auburn. I mean in general terms.

Also, the biggest weakness of the team is still exists, so why single out the ex-coordinator?

It is a team. The offense gets shite on plenty.

But a top defense should be able to get stops at the end of the game. If it was 1 or 2 times, that be different

People are capable of holding more than 1 thought in their head. There has been plenty of blame put on the offense. Are you oblivious to that?

By "drastic" do you mean going from 8 wins to 10+ wins, or a more fun team to watch on the field?
