It's not just the free throws. It's the time that it saves by fouling right after an inbounds. The player only gets 1-2 free throws. Yet you've stopped the clock in what could be an end of game situation where you can jack threes and make up the difference even if they make the free throws.
Isn't it 2 shots and the ball in the last 2 minutes of each period? I don't think the situation above could ever happen.

THIS. All day long. Seriously big men talk about being all about winning, yet won't try something that would almost definitely improve their FT shooting.

Agree 100%. I hate it. It makes watching a game miserable.

If they called it intentional. My point is they don't. If the icky is winding down at the end of a game an intentional foul becomes just an ordinary personal foul.

"And the referees are educated enough to understand when it's a basketball play"
That would seem to be a problem with NBA refs.

Under 2 minutes, everytime, if you foul a man off the ball it's been called 2 shots and the ball. That is why they stop fouling Jordan at the 2 minute mark. Everytime.

Yeah you're right. I got wrapped up in arguing a different point and forgot we were talking about fouls away from the ball. My rant was really about an intentional foul is intentional regardless of what moment during the game it's committed.

Easy fix.....let the team "decline" the foul and keep the ball or accept the foul and shoot the free throws.
Or if team A is fouling a bad shooter away from the ball let team B pick the shooter, just like technical fouls.

I've thought about this to help with fouls in the last 1-2 min. Good idea for hack a Shaq too.

You need to be careful as to how you change the rule due to unintended consequences. Next thing you know you create ways for referees to cause huge impacts on the game by calling ticky-tacky off the ball fouls late in the game.
This is something that has to be taken into consideration when changing rules. This is also why allowing teams to decline free throws and take the ball out of bounds for off the ball fouls is the perfect solution. No added penalty for accidentally fouling off the ball, doesn't prevent teams from fouling at the end of games as they do now, and completely takes away any advantage the defense would gain from using the tactic.
