I Finally Watched Interstellar Today (Spoilers)

I didn't really like it and, most importantly, it's definitely not a movie that I could tell somebody in good conscience that it was entertaining.
Until they find Matt Damon and the reveal that Alfred was lying about coming home, it was simply very boring. A big part of this issue was that the stakes were so big and such a slow burn, their impact was minimal. You can sell something like an asteroid coming to impact earth, requiring a space mission to save us all. It's much more difficult to sell a mission to save humanity a generation down the road. In real life? I get it. In a movie? It doesn't work as well.
Then they created conflict twice over with the Damon bullshite and the reveal about Plan A, and it came out of nowhere. It wasn't really organic and it didn't come from the plot and overall conflict. Damon's deceit was telegraphed once he was worried about them examining his robot, too.
The black hole part of the ending kind of meandered around and then admitted what had been offered: the "ghost" was him from the "future". And then it meandered on even more, when he was magically found and pleasantly got to live on a space station.
The movie was just a mess. It was very indulgent. It was a bunch of attempts at conflict and emotion thrown on a canvas hoping something stuck. It wasn't really interesting, novel, or entertaining. It did have Topher Grace, though, so that helped out some.
*ETA: and the sound mixing in the movie was absolutely terrible. I had to keep switching the volume for dialogue and fx.

it has it's flaws, but I liked the film. Watching in IMAX was just awesome.

i thought about that and that's why i added the ETA
i can't imagine watching this on IMAX with the sound issues

I have to run a few errands so I just bookmarked this thread. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
I enjoyed interstellar though and it's a great movie to me. But the biggest flaw to me was Romily spending at least ten years of those 23 years alone on that spaceship. That's some castaway type shite on steroids and how he didn't go insane is a mystery to me.

My main issue was Matt Damon showing up. I can't really explain why, but he just seemed odd and out of place in this film for me.

he did pick up the "asian philosopher" speaking style after that time alone

Watched it for the first time last night. I thought it was entertaining enough. Science fiction and space travel always get my attention though.
This is still difficult for me to wrap my head around. I wasn't really understanding the whole "One hour on this planet is seven years on Earth." Was this just because of the proximity of the planet to the black hole?

I agree. He was too big of an actor for that role. It totally took me out of the movie and made me think "Huh, I didn't know he was in the movie. How did I miss that he was part of the cast?" Nolan should have used a lesser known actor.
Overall I liked it, but thought it was one of Nolan's weaker films.
I'm not surprised SFP didn't like it though . I knew his post would be negative when I read the thread title and saw his name.

the vast majority of films i've posted reviews of on this board lately were given positive reviews

Judging from your complaints, don't watch 2001.

I've said it before, but Bryan Cranston was the perfect person to portray that character. You can believe he convinces 12 people to go on a suicide mission with him, that he's the best humanity has to offer, and that he's a treacherous ruthless coward. All Damon came across as is a giant pussy. He was incredibly miscast. I really think if Cranston was delivering those lines, no one would have a complaint about the character showing up in the end.

Great description. Full of plot holes as well.

i think a less physically imposing person, as long as a less screen-dominant person, would have worked better
you're basically dealing with a person who lost his faith in God and then lost his mind (due to loneliness)

I did like it mostly, however, my two biggest problems:
Matt Damon and
The terrible deus ex machina of 5th dimensional human beings and "love," what an awful conclusion.
Like I said, I still liked the film as an experience, but the more time goes on, the more I hate the ending. And I've watched it twice since the theater (thanks near-cross country trips).

Don't hate the movie, but I hate the ending for kind of killing the film's overall effect. I just couldn't buy it.

quote:i feel like people dont actually understand what this phrase means.
deus ex machina
if the 5th dimensional stuff is alluded to in the beginning of the movie (ghost in the bookshelf), i dont see how that is deus ex.
