Any Vets on the OT?

My dog , Blake , was just fine and his usual energetic self just 6 days ago. Here we are now at the Emergency Vet because he couldn't keep his eyes open and would not move , not even stand up. He 12 yrs old (adopted mutt , we've had him 10 years) but acts like a puppy. Nobody ever believes he is an older dog. The Vet is pushing to put him down and of course the SO and myself are devastated right now. He's pretty much our life. Is it common for cancer or any other disease to show no signs then start and get to the point of death within a week?! I'm at a loss. I don't fricking understand how less than a week ago he was just his regular chipper self and now having to decide whether to let him go. It started with not eating. He did eat some but not nearly the usual daily intake. Any response would be appreciated.

You named your dog Blake?

Sorry to hear about it
I think you know what you will have to do.
Make him comfortable, spend quality time with him, give him some nice food as a treat (many dogs love cheese), take a bunch of pics, then do what you have to do.
It's rough but it's what happens
best wishes

Unfortunately lack of appetite and his inability to keep his eyes open isn't much for a diagnosis.
You want a real answer, you're gonna have to get real procedures done, which unfortunately aren't feasible for a 12 year old dog.

Similar threads come up on here all the time. It could be something as temporary as a disc, or something more permanent.

I would get a second opinion.

He could be in renal failure. Has he had blood work done?
I think those emergency vets are notorious for wanting to euthanasia.

Docs can usually tell by looking at gum lines of the dogs which will tell them some signs of sickness.
Best of luck, that is an awful thing. If he was fine a few days ago, I might go to at least one other vet for a 2nd opinion before putting him down that quickly.

I'm not a vet, but maybe it's neurological and not cancer? Seems like cancer would have had symptoms building for a while?
Your situation is tough. Keep your head up

Might be dog flu.

do the blood work, do the radiographs, do a physical exam and figure out what's wrong. If they do a CBC, Chem Panel, chest and abdominal radiographs and proper physical exam then they can end up saying "I dunno" instead of just starting with that as the first answer.
relatively rapid onset of severe lethargy is not necessarily a death sentence or irreversible and don't accept that as a starting point for any conversation. yes, the prognosis is worse with older dogs and recovery might be more complicated or less likely... but it is still possible this is something you can at least temporarily fix.

Hope you don't feed him beneful from purina. My brother fed his dogs that food. One dog one year old one dog 12 years old. Both dead within 2 weeks.
Same symptoms you describe.

I'm not a vet, but my dog went through a similar situation. He was diagnosed with failing kidneys. We did all we could, but in the end we ultimately had to put him down. One day he was happy go lucky and the next day he barely ate and became very lethargic. On top of that when I tried to pick him up he snapped at me and wimpered in pain. We ran a number of test and decided there was no reason to prolong the suffering. It was a tough week. Sorry for your loss my friend.

Someone once said on here that when your pet stops being a pet and becomes a patient, it is time.
Sucks. I know. Had to put 2 of my best friends down a couple of years ago. And getting closer every day with my 12 year old, although she is completely healthy at this point.
Just make sure your dog is comfortable and not in pain. You'll know when it is time.

Let him go. It is a tough call to make, but think about his happiness. He can't move or keep his eyes open. when he does I bet he looks at you like "Please, put me out of my misery". my wife and I have been through this a few times and it is never easy. But when a dog can't move you are doing him a disservice by keeping him around because it hurts to say goodbye. Sit with him through the process and be sure to say "Thank You for being such a wonderful part of our lives" before he is gone.
After you've had time to mourn, get another dog. It will do you wonders.
Remember All Dogs Go to Heaven.
Good Luck with whatever you decide on.

did the vet diagnose it as cancer?
yes...it's certainly possible that the dog can take a turn for the worse in less than a week if it is cancer. remember, they can't tell you that they've been weak or sick by facial expressions or voice.
it's probable that he's been sick for a long time and it's finally at the end. always "love loosely" when it comes to dogs/pets. they will eventually break your heart.
