re: How much will Asik get next season?

I could see Asik considering it because of the cap increase in 2016. I will be a damn feeding frenzy in 2016. Its going to be crazy as frick.
Only problem is Omer is going to be 30 so he might want a long term deal. It would be a gamble for him. On the flipside, if he has a good year, he could get a last contract worth a lot more money.
I wonder if we could sign multiple one year deals next year and be major players in 2016. Clear enough room for a big time FA?

You also have to look at the centers on the market. This year it's a bunch of high end centers that puts him towards the back of the line. Next year it's a bunch of guys with similar skill sets to his so he'd be a lot closer to the front of the line.

It also makes you kind of wonder if a guy like, say, Middleton will take the QO to be a FA in 2016. That would be kind of unprecedented, especially for a player like that coming off a career year, but 2016 could change everything.

I like that idea a lot, would also give Dell another potential trade piece. I am still uneasy about how little depth talent there is in that 2016 free agency class vs the large increase in cap though. If a lot of guys sign 1 years deals maybe that help.

Do tell me who. Robin Lopez? That's about it and he's about to get paid. Kanter is on a rookie deal and plays no defense.
Spewing shite out of your arse.

Kofous, Wright, Serifian, Whiteside, Antic, Vucevic, Speights, Mosgov etc . . . (Granted some of those are rookie scale contracts but most are not)
Posted on 4/21/15 at 12:44 pm to TheJruth
Everyone and their mom skipped on Whiteside.
Wright is not even close to asik level on the defensive end.
Vucevic is a franchise big for Orlando, you can't touch him
Speights is undersized for a center and is far from better than him defensively.
Mosgov costed two 1sts
You list players thay are role players and nothing more. You also list players we have 0 hope or chances of obtaining.

This is one of the names that makes me laugh. I mean...come on. He's not going anywhere.

i don't think you know who these players actually are if you think they're "pretty much" the same

If Middleton is offered a max deal (which is based upon a percentage of cap) he would be smart to take it, if not, it's probably smart to roll the dice.
Klay Thompson actually did Golden State a solid this off season when he signed his deal. He signed a deal that would pay him "max" money on this salary cap, but is not based upon a percentage of the cap, so in essence it looks like a max deal with the current cap, but will not escalate with the huge cap increase.

I know many advanced +/- rate Middleton highly. Some talk he could get well over 8 figures.
middleton looked REAL legit post-ASB

I didn't say they were obtainable just that they get paid under 8 million dollars. There are plenty of centers who don't make over 8 million dollars. I just don't subscribe to the idea that the only way to get a starting caliber center is to pay him a ton of money. If that's your mindset, that's exactly what you will end up doing for better or worse.
Also the favoritism for "our guy" is always out of hand on this board. That same philosophy has got us to this point. We paid EG a ton of money because we couldn't afford to lose him. Didn't trade Ryno because he was "too valuable". Players have a certain value, if you inflate that value because they are "important" to your team, you are screwing yourself period, end of story.

i think a lot of that has to do with bird's rights and not emotional connection. also if he leaves, then we're in an uncertain position without many options
i keep pointing this out. bogut is a slightly better version of asik. he just signed a $12M/year deal. 50% more than asik's cap hit
bogut misses about 30-35% of the year in a healthy year...and he makes 50% more than asik

Exactly, it's not Asik for 10-11 mil or another center for that much, it's Asik for 10-11 mil or another center for ~5 mil.

I don't disagree with that, I just don't think the analysis should be one of loss aversion i.e. "We have to keep Asik because we are screwed without him."
If you think Asik has a certain range of value (8-10 million imo) then you pay him that. If he wants more than that, you look for value elsewhere.

Slo, only come to PT during the playoffs? What's up with that?

quote:Yup. Put me on the list of people who have been satisfied with what Asik has brought to the table. I think he's done exactly what we brought him in to do and he's had a major positive impact.

And it's all about cap hit when we're evaluating value. Having Bird rights on a true 7-foot lane monster is a huge asset. I give 0 fricks about Tom Benson's money.

i got busy and then FBB playoffs ended and i stopped following the NBA until the end of the pellies' run
Posted on 4/21/15 at 1:21 pm to Jamohn
and the "cap hit" is kind of irrelevant with the cap expansion. it's not like we have a ton if he bolts
now if we could S/T asik for a better overall roster? ok, but there aren't that many deals that can be made that way

Bird-Rights isn't a get out of jail free card. You still actually have to take that cap hit for the next 3-4 years.
For example, say we sign Asik to a similar contract to Bogut. In two years from now if Asik is performing at a 8 million dollar level, you still have to take the 12 million dollar cap hit. lol.
