What was Katrina like?

I was only 15 when it happened so I obviously remember a good bit, but I really didn't pay much attention to the news, media aside from "Get the hell outta town" and a bit of what was going on in the city. I was in Texas for the storm and then relocated to Baton Rouge for several months w/ family. But for OT veterans and so on, any stories you can share or an insight as to what it was like?

I didn't live there but everyone I have talked with that did wish they took more clothes and the car that was paid off.

Yeah, not worth reliving. Terribly sad time.

For me, it was time off from LSU playing Final Fantasy X-2 for a week. We only lost power for an hour or so when they brought the power back on for the street over, which lost it for some reason. Good wind and rain.
Gustav fricked us pretty good, however.
Edit: Also, how do you need to ask this? I have decent memories from Andrew, and I was 8 at the time.

HS coaches would comb the refugee shelters looking for likely prospects. Bastrop did it more successfully than most and got a state championship out of it.

I have. I'm actually watching videos on YT right now about it.

I was in BR but lucky, the electricity was only out one day and the water didn't go out at all.
I had some trouble getting in touch w/ out of state relatives for a few days. That was probably my biggest problem.
The night of Katrina I was at sort of a hurricane party at the home of some friends who lived nearby (we were all still without power remember), and we began slowly getting intermittent cell phone messages from NO telling of rumors about flooding...

Damn, I was only 12 and can vividly remember watching the levees break on our 12" tv we had hooked up to our generator with my aunt and uncle from NOLA staying with us

Co workers were talking about it tonight and couple of my managers. Realized that I really just played video games during the majority of my time away and figured what better place to ask than the OT board.

MRE's, Camping on my parents front porch, and kneeboarding behind the four wheeler in our flooded yard. Other than that it totally sucked.

If you lived in or close to new Orleans at the time you'd remember it vividly. It was like a scene out of a post apocalyptic movie. One of the darker if not darkest chapters in my life.

Worked triage at one of the major field hospitals. Cops were shot. Old people were abandoned. People were euthanized. Many older folks lost their pets, watched them drown. All that was, and still is, mostly swept under the rug.
Bush was blamed by our incompetent local leadership for not overstepping his constitutional authority. It then became a political train wreck.
