In the 90's teams/stars were aided by illegal defenses, now it's via flopping.

Crazy how flopping suddenly became an issue once GIFs/Vines started being made and Twitter became a thing....

Jordan got a mismatch and was being covered by Juwan Howard...the same thing happens in 2015, they clear the floor and let them go to work. You couldn't have picked a worse example to prove your point...besides Howard, all four of the Bullets defenders were in the paint and three were covering no one (two Bulls were outside the 3pt line and another was on their way).
Back then, they could only go halfway into the paint when their man was on the weak side. This creates way more space to go 1-on1.
Now, a big man can stand on the block on the strong side, and other players can shade the ball handler near the strong side elbow.
It makes helping out if the original defender gets beat much easier. There is also much less space to work with.
quote:The point was to show how double teams worked in the 90's. It isn't the same as today. The rules specifically stated back then that a player has to aggressively double team. He has to make a b-line to the ball. There are no soft doubles where a secondary defender hangs out in space and waits for the right time to try to disrupt the dribble.
A "double team in the 90s" didn't necessarily include two players basically running into one another.
It was much easier to exploit these double teams because players cannot hang out in space the same way as today to cover 2 guys to make the close out quicker and rotations easier.

You don't have to get snippy.

back then, the defenders were required to stick on their man and follow them all around the court like a puppy dog.
I just want to know who these three players are guarding on the play you drew everyone's attention to:

I explained in other posts that there are rules as to where a defender has to be when the offense spreads the floor with guys out past the 3-point line.
I thought it would be too complicated or confusing trying to explain those rules in the OP. So I made my general point, and discussed the details of the rules in other posts in this thread.
2 of those guys should have been out past the free throw line since the guys they were defending were above the 3-point line.
However, Jordan drove to the basket before they got all the way out past the free throw line, and so they cut back the other way towards Jordan to help.
My general point is the illegal defense rules stretches the defense out.
Here is what an isolation play looks like today:
You have Taj Gibson standing outside of the paint on the block on the strong side to be a second layer of defense outside of the paint. That would be obvious illegal defense back in the 90's.
Then you have (I think that's Nate Robinson) on the weakside elbow. Many times, a guy will cheat over more towards the middle of the lane to help out if LeBron drives middle.
So there is immediate help to both LeBron's left and right.
Of course there was a such thing as help defense in the 90's. However, because the defense was more spaced out, it was more difficult to get in good position in time. There was no second layer of defense like with Taj Gibson in the screenshot above. The next layer of defense in the 90's would be closer to where Noah is standing, under the basket.

I see a bunch of times in that video where Michael drives and the defensive center comes up to stop him from driving and Michael pulls up and makes a jump shot. That's just fricking impressive

I think one of the kids in this thread referred to John Starks as "that little white guy guarding MJ."

A few people in here have said the 80s was far better than today as well. Please watch the full game from the 84 finals of the Celtics vs lakers without gouging your eyes out. One loses any credibility when saying 80s basketball was even worth a shite compared to today

And for people that don't think athletes have gotten bigger and better from the 90s is a joke. Nutrition and training has come light years. My friends dad ayes for the Saints in the early 90s and they had Coke and Dr pepper in the locker rooms at halftime for a quick "burst of energy"

That's all they had to drink back then!!!! Gatorade and Powerade hadn't even been invented yet!!! MJ used to sip RC Cola during timeouts. Sports Nutrition was invented in 2005. They didn't even have weight training!!! Karl Malone and David Robinson were stick figures!!!
Seriously, that little story from your dad, if true, says more about why the Saints have always sucked so bad than anything else.

And here is another thing for you old bastards. The nebraska football team from the 80s to mid 90s attribute their success to being one of the only programs at the time to actually buy into weight lifting and serious strength training. What the hell were you old fairies doing? Shopping instead of hitting the gym?
