Just curious

I think it's pretty unanimous that we would love him on this board
Posted on 4/16/15 at 1:41 pm to LSUlefty
Because he won't be there at 13. If he would happen to fall which he won't then sure we would take him with open arms.

Only reasoning I could think is the FO is very confident in who we have currently. Which in that case would make one of us.

this used to be the case. now it seems many of the mockers and rankers are dropping him on their boards. I haven't seen reasoning why, and it could all be the smoke screens creating this. He is my #1 get if he falls to us. If the latest trends are to be trusted, then he should be there at 13

Davis had him @ #19 last night.

as shitty as the defense was and with a LB overhaul it is to be seen how the scheme shakes out. The more they wanna lean 3-4, the more Shelton is valued.
I'll have to admit, if there is any position I'm gun shy about the Saints it is DT. The combo of Sullivan and Ellis was a brutal hit to the franchise. Ya'll noticed Ellis even retired his fat arse after collecting $30+ Mil from the team.

i think there are some character concerns about him from what i've seen here and there.

Some people feel he is a two down run stopper and you don't spend a top 15 pick on a two down run stopper. There are some reports that NFL personnel are not as high on him as the mock draft community for this reason. Maybe it's a smoke screen and the poor DT class will push him up, but I remember many people grading Phil Taylor really high and he still went 21.

Idc we need a mean Nasty DT . He can play the 1 Tech , the 0 maybe even the 3. People hate Suh's attitude, but he dominates. I don't agree on his personal fouls, but when he lines up his attitude is eff the whole offensive I want to hurt you everytime we make contact . With Shelton being double teamed Jordan and Galette will reach double digit sacks and let's not forget about Hicks. We would instantly have a top 10 D-Line or at least one of the most intimidating.

it all depends on the system. if we are running a true 3-4, then the big NT is in on 3rd downs as well. In this case, he is a must get. The purpose of the NT is to control the LOS and open everything up for the 4 LBs and even the DEs. They are the focal point of the system.
As blues states, it all depends on if we are going to be a true 3-4 or stay with the hybrid system. If we are to be a hybrid, then the value of taking him at 13 may be a little less. He won't be in on passing downs, because we are putting Jordan and Hicks inside and he'll be watching from the sidelines.
Now if he is a 3 down player regardless of down and distance, then he is a must get.
what character concerns are there, chad? I haven't seen this yet

You're killing me! These next two weeks are gonna be hard enough without these kind of things being said. I'm highly susceptible to sunshine pumping.

He is a three down player. People have raved about his stamina at such a big size and also at one point he led the team in sacks.

I don't know if he is or isn't, but I haven't read anything to suggest he isn't. That's why I am pining for him to be drafted here. But if he is only a 2-down guy and we aren't a full time 3-4, then I understand passing on him.

The majority of his sacks came against shite teams, so I don't think you can say he is a 3 down player based on that. Out of his 9 sacks, he had 4 against Eastern Washington, 2 against Hawaii, and 1 against Ga State. Likewise 9.5 of his 16.5 TFL's came in those three games.
He gives great effort and will track down RB's from behind for tackles. He also has good athleticism for his size, but whether or not he can disrupt the QB at the next level is still a question. If teams think he can be a three down player and cause significant interior pressure (more so than a sub package rusher) then he will be drafted high like Poe, Suh, Dareus, MCCoy, Raaji and Nagta. If they are less convinced of that and feel he may end up just being a two down run stuffer, then he should slide into the teens, maybe 20's like Sylvester Williams, Phil Taylor, Dan Williams, Jerry Peria...etc.

There has been some chatter that the NFL scouts and teams aren't as high on Shelton as the casual fan seem to be.
He's not that versatile and only fits a certain scheme and we run a lot of different schemes and looks on D. He's a great run stopping DT but doesn't bring much to the table in passing situations. And IMO, Arik Armstead and Malcolm Brown are much more versatile and have a higher ceiling than Shelton. A bit more of a bust factor, especially with Armstead, but if all 3 of those guys get near their ceiling I think Armstead and Brown would be better players than Shelton.
But that's pretty much the only negative things I can think of with Shelton. I'd be happy with him at #13.

How many 320+ lbs D-Linmen currently in the NFL would you even take in the top 15 of this draft? (just on talent not age)
Poe
Dareus
Brockers
Lotulelei
Raji
Ngata
These were the only guys (don't think I missed anyone) in the past 10 drafts that were 320+ DL taken in the top 15. All of these turned out pretty good, but only 4 of them are truly NTs.
Seems like d-linemen that weigh 320+ are really tough to evaluate and teams are kinda scared off.

that's because it's an incredibly difficult position to fill. with so many teams playing 3-4 today, it's even more so. NT is a premium spot for a 3-4 team, so to find the right guy you need to take a chance on him early.

Star wasn't 320+. I would take Poe, Dareus, Ngata, and maybe Brockers.
However out of these, not all were effective at the nose. Dareus, Poe, Raji play(ed) 3-4 nose (Brockers has not). People keep comparing Shelton to Ngata, but Ngata played poorly when he primarily played nose in '13 and I would not take ngata to play nose.
Shelton is not as talented or versatile as Dareus or Brockers and is not the athlete that Poe was. Shelton's numbers compare more evenly to Dan Williams, Phil Taylor, or Raji (a bit more athletic). Raji had one good season and Williams has been a good two down run stopper.
I think Shelton needs to lose weight. He looks fat. He needs to get closer to that 315-320 range like Dareus, Star, and others. He was excited about getting down to 340 for the combine which scares me in New Orleans.
