I remember reading on DandyDon a while back speculating why Mickey left early. He said (and I'm paraphrasing based on what I remember reading)that Mickey knows if he comes back he would have to play the 4 or 5 position in college and he didn't want to "play out of position" anymore.

Maybe Mickey felt like he can develop his skillset at the 3 by going overseas for a couple of years. He would never get that opportunity to develop himself as a 3 while at LSU.

Fair enough on wanting to develop at the 3.

We need to start seeing these guys like gymnasts or track athletes or golfers or tennis players. The idea of "team" only exists in consideration of how they develop their overall talent.

While you or I would LOVE to be on a TEAM and try to win a championship, young basketball players who are talented do not think that way anymore. They have been dealt with as an individual for a long time and they see themselves that way. So, they not only go after the money, but they also think about how they can best personally develop for the future rather than help the team win games.

I am not making a judgment one way or the other. It is how things are. But, if he wanted to develop at the 3, then leaving is the best option.

The problem now, though, is that he will never make it in the NBA. He'll wander around Europe playing basketball. There are worse ways to live, though. More power to him!

Mickey will never ever be an NBA 3 if you can't see that from watching him at LSU the last 2 years I don't know what you were watching. Mickey will always be an undersized 4 height wise but with his length and athleticism "if" he develops his skill set could carve out a role in the NBA. Right now with his present skill set, he won't have more than a cup of coffee in the league.

I don't think he's that naïve to think he actually has a shot at this point in his career to suddenly develop a 3's skillset for the NBA. Either you have it or you don't at this point for him, he simply doesn't. He's an undersized PF, period.

I get the intent here, but developing as a 3 in the FIBA environment will not make him any more ready to play that position in the NBA.

Positions are dying in basketball, mostly due to the heavy FIBA influence; they have no positions overseas.

I think the majority of you are missing the boat. Without a great deal of "individual hard work" Mickey wasn't going to be a three. If LSU let him play there or not really had nothing to do with it.

He just didn't have 3 pro skills. He needed a much better jump shot with more range. His ball handling skills and dribbling needed to improve a whole lot. His passing was the worst part of his game.

Add in so so free throw shooting and some poor decisions like trying to drive through people to get to the goal and he was never going to make the first round.

And like South pointed out if you don't make first round then it doesn't matter. In the end you have to make a team and to do that you have to beat out veterans, draftees and the non-drafted being given tryouts.

I hope I don't give the wrong impression here. Mickey was a great college player for us. Bless him for coming and I appreciate all he did for the team while he was here. But there are really very few slots for a pro player in the NBA and you have to be one of the truly select to have a career there. Good luck to him.
