JEANERETTE — Louisiana State Police announced charges for two men involved in a high-speed vehicle chase that ultimately killed the Jeanerette Police officer that initiated the traffic stop.
Antre Joseph, 21, of New Iberia, is charged with manslaughter and aggravated flight from an officer after he apparently led Jeanerette Police Officer Juandre Gilliam on a vehicle chase around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday that ended when Gilliam’s 2006 Ford Crown Victoria police car veered off the road, hit a culvert and flipped, ejecting and killing the officer.

Master Trooper Brooks David, public information officer for State Police Troop I, said in a statement Tuesday that Gilliam was not wearing his seat belt during the crash. He was critically injured and pronounced dead at Iberia Medical Center.
David said this morning the two vehicles collided at least once during the chase, but investigators weren’t sure when or if it directly caused Gilliam’s crash.
“We don’t know and I’m not sure we’ll ever know,” he said. “We are actively investigating. The troopers are out there again today.”

SIAP, I searched.
Sad story, but unless the officer's accident was the result of a collision that was initiated by the suspect, I'm not very comfortable with a manslaughter charge without a seatbelt.

Well the death is a result of the suspect fleeing.

But a cop can attempt to shoot a dog, fail..kills a woman and is cleared.

How is this manslaughter but it isn't manslaughter when that cop accidentally shot that woman recently?

Juandre should have been wearing his seat belt.

He's lucky they are only charging him for manslaughter. Check out the felony murder rule.

quote:Yeh really. If a doctor/car crash expert says that a seatbelt would have prevented death, then I dont see how the hell they get charged with manslaughter. The cop broke the law by not wearing his seatbelt
Really?

Well the death is a result of the suspect fleeing.

I'm aware, and as facts come out the charge may be more than justified, but it just seems a bit steep at the moment.

Some of these guys will always find a way to blame the cop for everything.
Yes, the cop should have been wearing his seat belt. But I have absolutely no issue with this. The cop's death is a direct result of these guys' decision to run.

Unfortunately if he kills a dog while shooting at a dog no charges either

quote:No, the car crash is the direct result of their decision to run. If death is proven because he wasnt wearing his seatbelt, then I dont think manslaughter will stick

But not a direct result, so manslaughter won't stick
