Officials at Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) are investigating the deaths of two inmates as homicides.

The first incident occurred at 12:46 a.m. Saturday, April 11, when inmate Damion Soward, 37, was found unresponsive in his cell. He was transported to an outside hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 12. Next-of-kin have been notified.

Prison officials have named Soward’s cellmate, Lawrence Phillips, 39, as a suspect in the case. Phillips was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on Oct. 16, 2008, from San Diego County to serve a 31-year, four-month sentence for inflicting great bodily injury involving domestic violence, corporal injury to spouse, false imprisonment and vehicle theft. Phillips played in the National Football League prior to his incarceration in state prison.

Soward was received by CDCR on March 12, 2009, from San Bernardino County to serve 82 years to life for first-degree murder.

I don't know whether to think this is sad news or it's the first good thing Phillips ever did.

For those unfamiliar, Phillips was a phenomenal talent who was a fricking retard off the field and one of the biggest wastes of talent in the last 25 years.

Kinda fitting that his highlight tape is set to the song "Smack My Bitch Up"

82 years to life? I wonder if CA has a 85% rule like LA...
Mr Soward would be eligible for parole after only 69.7 years and still be a relatively young man of only 100, instead of 113.

He was a power back (Nebraska, I think). He wasn't Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker, but he was plenty fast enough and could run people over. The St Louis Rams passed Eddie George to take Lawrence Phillips in the 1st round. He'd already been in trouble in college (beat his girlfriend or attempted rape or something. I don't remember exactly, but it involved violence and a woman) and a female friend of mine who was a huge Rams fan was apoplectic about the situation. She was right. He fricked up again and the Rams eventually ran him off. I think he may have played for the 49ers after that, but he was constantly in trouble. Just a huge waste of talent, a la Cecil Collins.

I remember him being a bigger back. 6' and 225ish. But it's been close to 20 years, so I'm not positive.

Tom Osborne knew his past and still brought him on campus. It's on him.

He was 6'0" 224 lbs beast of a running back. But he couldn't block worth a shite and he always was a complete POS.

Had Lawrence Phillips had a lick of common sense, he more than likely would have won the Heisman Trophy in 1995.

Ya know, when you're already serving 31 years, your field of fricks to give is probably pretty barren. Especially when they you're pissed at is serving 80.
