Also I've never had to get a loan scholarship or grant. Don't wen know where to start. Due to financial reasons we would def need help. My job can pay our bills but not school as well so anybody who can offer advice on that would be great!!
Thanks OT!!

The reason we are going for ADN is our finances. We have a 2yr old daughter. She has 1-2 yrs of college already so the basics should be knocked out
Then y'all are making the best decision for your situation.

AFTigerFan thanks it's the best plan we can think of. If we didn't have a child then the BSN would be fine. But we are both 24 been to college already and going back to so it right.
If we could we would kick our younger selves in the arse for not staying in school but life happens like they say.

I can't help you out with the loan, scholarship, or grant part. I ended up getting a second job to put my wife through her RN diploma program. It was tough but worth it in the end. We didn't have kids then, so hopefully that will help you qualify for some type of financial aid.

Yea I'm thinking of getting a second job even if we get financial aid just to be safe

Looked at the program and most of her basics are knocked out with the exception of 2 courses it looks like. Still need to get transcript and see what gets rolled over.
Yeah you are gonna have to have them tell you exactly what they will accept or not. I remember when I went to BRG School of Nursing a couple of my classmates still needed their nutrition class so they took a nightclass the first semester for that class. Depending on the school they may allow her to do that(depending on the classes she is missing).
Baton Rouge General School of Nursing is another option. Look into them. When I went there they had amazing instructors and the school has a very high NCLEX passrate. You get a ton of clinical experience in their program as well. When I went they were a diploma program only. However....diploma vs ADN...really not a big difference. Both are not BSNs and are looked at in the same light.

Went to the nursing school off Julia St. And there program takes 2 yrs at $4500 a semester.
each semester at BRCC has been about $1000-1500 after all fees, depending on how many classes were taken. . .
(I pretty much followed the curriculum plan that is on the BRCC website)

My wife and I were in a similar situation a year back trying to get through school with our 2 year old son.
She had a previous bachelor's and got into an accelerated 12 mo. program here in Missouri and got her BSN.
Not sure if they have comparable programs in Louisiana, but you should investigate.
Also look into one of several HRSA scholarships. In exchange for working with underserved populations, she could have up to 85% of her loans forgiven.

Go the ADN route. Majority of hospitals care less unless it's a management position. I've been a nurse 10 years and know this for a fact.

What you said s what we are encouraging my granddaughter to do. Get the associates and work on the BSN oa line while working. I'm a hospital trained RN, diploma only. I found that I would not get a return on my investment if I went back for a BSN. Am retired now, so it doesn't matter anymore. I wish her the best!
ETA: base pay rate for nurses in Baton Rouge is lower than many other areas.

And I've been one for 14 years and in some hospitals in some states they ARE making their nurses get their BSN or they no longer have a job. This is my situation and another poster that said his wife in Ohio is being made to sign an agreement with her hospital to get her BSN soon to keep her job.
So it really just depends on where you are a nurse at.

So with all these people telling you you might be off, you're still gonna keep going with it?
Posted on 4/9/15 at 7:58 pm to LNCHBOX
But I'm not off. He is saying it's false. But it's not. It may not be the case where he works at....but I know for damn sure I didn't imagine the email I received from work that said "if you do not have your BSN by Dec 31 2019 you will no longer have a nursing position at our hospital"
So if it is true for me and for the other posters who have mentioned the same thing or similar....how is that completely false? Unless he posts "that is false for the Baton Rouge area"

What's the best specific field and what's in demand? Most nursing fields are in demand. More popular ones are ICU, ER, and home health for those that like independence.
What's the base salary? Starting out you are looking at $23 an hour, but make more if work nights and weekends. Looking at around $5 extra an hour working weekends
What's the best route going through a hospital or through a college? And what's the best options with affordable tuition? Best bet is a BSN and taking out loans. You can go the associates route, but will probably have to go back for BSN within 10 years depending on if she works in a hospital

The ADN or BSN thing is a "Magnet" driven requirement.
10% of hospitals are magnet as of now. Not sure how many will try to be. It's a lot to do for a facility. Magnet requires 80% of their nurses be BSN by 2020. Hence these numbers mentioned earlier.
If the OP has the extra year, do the BSN.
They will always need agency nurses. If a place needs agency, they don't care. They just want the RN.
But BSN is better.

You do realize your experiences aren't the be all end all of the nursing world, correct?
What you originally posted in this thread is completely false. You don't have to have a BSN to make a living. You may have to at you specific hospital, but it is not a truth across the board.
But since you have nurse in your name, you've labelled yourself the be all end all expert on all things nursing... except you aren't.
So instead of repeating your personal experience again, why don't you just sit back and realize that perhaps your experience isn't the only one that matters.

I hire nurses for ICU positions. I hire experienced and new grads, ADN and BSN. For me it's about the interview and recommendations.
Salary info
Base 22.75 ICU add 1.50
.60/hr for every year exp.
After 3pm extra 4.00/hr
Weekends 2.00/hr
Full-time is 72hrs per pay period
So 54k a year for new grad working 3 nights a week.
This doesn't figure holiday pay, vacation, ect.
Work an extra night, pick up an extra 4- 500.00 with OT.

So what about the other nurses that posted the same thing I did regarding BSNs?
And no you can find jobs with ADN....never said you couldn't....but it's gonna be more difficult than if you had your BSN or you may have to settle job wise
