Don't let someone talk her out of it, if it's her dream or goal. Plenty of hospitals still hire ADN nurses. The pay isn't as glamorous as most would think though. If she has the opportunity to go back to school and is willing to put in the effort, then encourage her. Worry about finding a job when she gets out. That's what EVERYONE does that goes to school.

All of the recent grads I know are making 60-70 right out...all ADN RN.
Granted this is ICU nights and some weekends.

Depends on the courses. ADN and Diploma nursing programs still require you to have certain prereq classes before you can be in their programs. Your basic math and english classes. Plus nutrition, psych, biology, sociology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry and I forget what else. I think statistics as well for ADN(I didn't need that for diploma program...but will need for BSN).

UL Lafayette online RN - BSN program. Since I had all but 3 classes left it's 7 weeks online paid by my employer.

Well yeah that is different.
If she goes for her ADN and then goes for BSN...the usual online RN to BSN programs take an average of 14-18 months. That is also working full time as a nurse as well.

Lsunurse thanks for all the sound advice and input. She has been a stay at home mom and she's ready to get her degree. I told her it wouldn't be easy to work full time and get the BSN but she can do it

Listen, all I am saying is after I got my bachelors and decided to go back to school for nursing, I considered all options. I was very discouraged by many people to not get my ADN and that I was "wasting my time." It was the only option I had at the time and went ahead and did it. Best decision ever. Plently of good paying jobs. She will be fine. Now, it is true more hospitals want bsn nurses, but that does not mean she won't be hired. And that certainly does not mean she will be limited to a nursing home . Right here in New Orleans they are about to have two huge hospitals open up. Tons of nursing jobs will be open. Don't be discouraged by others. Every hospital is different.

My wife is a nurse here in Birmingham.
Her hospital will only hire BSN nurses for most floors. She works on an ICU floor and they will only use BSN.
If your comfortable with her making 20-30k while getting her BSN why not just get some other side job? Hell you can make that cutting grass
Hospital nurses in Birmingham make ~$20 an hour base with differentials for evenings, nights, weekends. Some nurses who never pick up shifts will bring home south of 40k, those who put in a little extra or work nights make about 50k a year.

Good luck! I'm def not trying to discourage her. Just wanted her to know the trends going on in nursing(at least what I see out west). However....things could be different in LA. I haven't worked there in 10 years so I can only comment on what I see out west.
It will be tough, but very much doable if you stay focused. Nursing school in general can be tough. I found regular classes at LSU much easier than nursing school. I was used to casually looking over notes and studying the night before an exam and acing the exam at LSU. Not the case in nursing school.
