Tiger woods, in his prime, could bench 400lbs.

Unsubstantiated rumor, but he has said himself on numerous occasions in interviews when asked about his fitness that he benched over 300 lbs. I'll see if I can find one

Being an athlete is more about the mental focus and determination than it is the physical. In golf, as in many other sports, the better mentally focused and prepared mind has a huge advantage.
lol, no it's not. It makes a good athlete great. But you can have all the mental focus you want, if you don't have the physical gifts, you aren't gonna be very good

I think that golf involves a lot of skill and is a sport, but golfers are not athletes. Casey Martin was considered disabled, but was a professional golfer.

My view is that a sport should at the very least involve running for its players to be called athletes.

So the gymnasts on the balance beam, the pummel horse, the uneven bars etc aren't athletes? They aren't running how bout michael phelps?

Good point. Swimmers and gymnasts are certainly athletes. Back to the drawing board.

I train a girl that does barrel racing. Is she an athlete? If you don't, I invite you to come participate in her training program and then revisit your answer

lol. All of these these require certain levels & different types of athleticism. The type of athleticism required to be good at golf is not the same as football. Cycling isn't the same as a 100 meter sprinter

Are football, basketball and baseball players athletes?

quote:

I'm eating this big meal and maybe having a couple of beers and smoking a cigarette. A woman comes by the table. She recognizes me and she's shocked because it seems like I should be in training or something. She's getting all over me, saying that a professional athlete should take better care of himself. I lean back and I say to her, "I ain't an athlete, lady. I'm a baseball player." -John Kruk (3X All-Star)

Kevin Durant could not bench press 185 pounds at least once during the NBA Combine.

Then there's Jared Lorenzen, Quarterback

Although gymnastics would be a whole lot more entertaining with a terry Tate type defender

So only if you get paid for it you can call yourself an athlete? Is that where you draw the line?
