I thought about this the other day and kind of agree. The ability to stay focused and keen for hours is a feat.

I heard Billy Cannon was pretty good at golf and he ran a 3.8 second 40.

So a business man negotiating a business deal does the same shite, does that make him an athlete too?
What about a lawyer? He bluffs for a living.
I guess fricking not.

And truckers, they might be the best athletes of all.

Being an athlete is more about the mental focus and determination than it is the physical. In golf, as in many other sports, the better mentally focused and prepared mind has a huge advantage.

Well yeah BC they have secure their load with chains and straps. Also, climbing in and out of the cab a few times a day takes endurance.

Babe Ruth played drunk a lot

You can technically play any sport drunk you just won't play as well.
NBA and NFL players have admitted to played stoned or after smoking crack does that mean those aren't sports?

True. But golf is clearly a refined physical skill as well. I'm not a golf fan, but it always makes me lol when someone tries to say it isn't a sport (not saying you are). It's the very definition of sport.

Golf is a gentlemen's game turned into a sport.

This isn't a debate. Golfers are most certainly athletes. Now golf is more of skill based sport than it is an athletic sport, but it still requires athleticism. Same with bowling. And just because john daly was a fat slob, doesn't mean golfers aren't athletes. In fact, him being able to play as long as he did at the level he did despite his physical condition just shows you how great of an athlete he was.
