LSU Recruiting shifting thier focus for QB's (ESPN)

While it's clear LSU is shifting its focus away from the traditional drop-back passing quarterback, Austin Thomas, LSU's director of player personnel, said the Tigers need a quarterback that's much more than just someone who can run.
quote:
There's definitely an element of change to what we're looking for in recruiting now," Thomas said. "We need a guy that has an ability to not necessarily be a dual-threat guy, but a guy that can extend the plays. Those are key words -- the ability to extend the play. If you have an off-the-charts guy that might be a pocket passer, of course you would love to have those guys and you would build the offense around what they do well. But in an ideal world, we would like a guy that has the ability to be pocket-mobile and be able to make some plays throwing and running. It's also safe to say that we just don't want a guy that can only run the football."
quote:
LSU's fresh recruiting approach at quarterback has already produced success in the 2016 class. The Tigers have already accepted an early commitment from Feleipe' Franks, the No. 51 player in the ESPN Junior 300 and the seventh-ranked quarterback in the country. His playing style -- a combination of arm strength, athleticism and the ability to escape -- fits what the Tigers are looking for moving forward.
quote:
"I love the offense and what they're asking the quarterbacks to do," Franks said. "That's really why I committed. I want to go to a place that is going to prepare me for the next level, and I believe Coach Cameron's approach and the LSU system will do that."

I don't care if he can run/not run, black/white/orange/pink...for the love of God, get a fricking QB that can help us win games.

"We have to do better," Miles said. "We will do better."
quote:
"First and foremost you have to have a decision-maker," Miles said. "Whether it's a guy that can read a defensive end and know to disconnect or give, or read a secondary and make the right throw. He has to be a great decision-maker first. Then obviously, the ability to throw the football is important. If your guy can throw the football, that's the next piece. Now what we'd like to do is find guys that can throw and have the ability to move their feet like the guys that we've got and are going after in recruiting. We have to make sure we're getting guys that are strong at all three things."

Don't know why it's taken this long to realize our QB recruiting has been average.
Why on earth we can't find a drop back 3-4 star qb to come in and throw 15-20x a game without throwing it into the ground or into the other teams hands is beyond me
It's time to move on from the Jennings, Harris, Jefferson's of the world...These kids will surely cost a coach's job

This kids gonna be a great tiger, been dedicated since day one and can't wait to see him in purple and gold

Is it just me but I'm so envious of Clemson's Deshaun Watson, Tennessee's Dobbs , Ohio States 12 gauge, Auburn's Johnson, and MSU Prescott how do we miss on cerebral and athletic qb's like these I just don't get it that can consistently move a offense with great efficiency!

When we scout these kids, we scout them in a system that they are familiar with, geared to their strong points, and therefore, they flourish. Then we put them into a new system and they aren't as strong at developing as their bum high-school coach said that they were capable of... hence... our present situation. What kills me is the lack of developing an offense that these kids can understand and run effectively.

All those guys you listed can do one MAJOR thing our guys can't,
And that's pass
And that's pass

As much as I love Les, his fascination with dual threat qb's in his pro style offense is one of the more contradicting coaching philosophies I can think of.
He needs to put more consideration into spreading the ball out more when nearly 80% of these quarterbacks are coming in from spread offenses. The qb's that sign with spread schools have a much smaller learning curve, hence it takes our guys an eternity to adjust

Yep. And going to more of a spread attack doesn't mean you have to get away from a physical, ball-control type offense that Les (and I, personally) likes.
We've got to play to our players' strengths and get these plethora of elite athletes in some space.

If given time Harris would light it up in those offenses. In this offense, not so much. If Harris stay's he will wind up being a pretty good QB. if he would have went to Auburn or MSU he would have been in the Heisman discussion at some point in his career.

Yeah it's frustrating seeing how much more comfortable Harris and Jennings are in the spread, yet we keep "putting a square peg in a round hole"
My positiger rationale last season was that the objective was ball control to keep our vastly overrated defense off the field. The linebackers were fine and secondary was solid, but that doesn't really matter when the QB has 5-8 seconds to make a play every time. I feel like LSU hasn't had a pass rush since 'nam
eta: with that said, LSU could have still gone the Ohio State route and had a power run game out of the spread. Give fournette more field to work with

I just wish these guys would take an approach to being a great qb at LSU like ordinary people like us take to being a great, productive worker on our jobs knowing we have too perform exceptionally or be shown the door we have to work like this too, feed ourselves an our kids an keep bills paid. They need too approach football like we approach life with great passion playing Qb at LSU isn't a privilege its an honor an they should approach it as such!

Miles is a negatiger. We need Beefense and Gray Tigerwhateverhisnameis to get in here and castigate Miles for talking badly about the program.

Look, I don't like these decade-long JJ/JL AJ/BH QB disputes either, but let's have some perspective.
The JJ/JL debate was traumatic from our, the fans', point of view because it was frustrating and polarizing, but the 2011 season can arguably be looked at as one of the greatest regular seasons in college football history. The BCS loss was a punch in the gut, but that shouldn't totally take away the fact that it was possibly the best LSU team in history even though there were the problems at QB.
As for the current AJ/BH debate, we had a down year last year and both players laid eggs in key games (notably Auburn and Arkansas). But I'm very optimistic about the coming season because we could practically run a Navy or Georgia Tech running offense and win, due to our embarrassment of riches at RB and more than a few great OLs. I have no idea how AJ and BH are developing, but I'm of the opinion that players tend to get better with game experience and practice. No matter who the starter is, I think they'll be more productive than we were last year.
With our QBs this year and Franks coming in next year, I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see a positive trend in LSU QB production.
I just don't feel the same panic that everyone else does about our QB situation. Especially when we've got a soph and a junior going into this year, as opposed to a true fresh and a soph.

Harris was very raw, but he was also the best QB prospect from Louisiana since Perriloux.
Watson was dominating for years as a passer and runner in high school and was just much better as a passer. Dobbs still has much to learn in the pass game, and I believe Harris could achieve what Dobbs did last year with a full season. Johnson in a pocket passer with mobility, think Big Ben, Jamarcus Russell, etc.
The other two are 3rd and 4th year players. Check Cardele in the spring game prior to last season. Didn't even look like he would play QB at OSU. Another thing is that these systems they run are much, much easier than the pro style system Harris and Jennings have to learn.
Feliepe Franks is similar to a Jameis Winston, but with maturity. Right now he is working on improving his passing, not his running. He had all of 25 carries last year for his team and had less the year prior. We are also really hoping we can get Dwayne Haskins, who is a very accurate pocket passer (don't know how mobile he is though). Times are changing, but I think it has more to do with Cam's influence.

Time to move on from Jennings and Harris? Really

How is this any different from the types of QBs LSU has been recruiting over the past few years?

If we do go this route, and I'm not advocating one way or the other, LSU will be sacrificing some of its prestige as an NFL pipeline for WRs, RBs, and, even QBs.
