re: How many of you put your religion before everything else in life?

I'm not so much of someone who follows a religion per say. I believe religion, which is man's law to follow God is sometimes misguided. Man tries to put their rules on equal ground with Gods laws which has created too much distain for God. I myself am a Christian who asked the very question your asking. How do I know I'm following the right "course". I heard a pastor sum it up quite simple. First, considering there is a God and Devil, which I do, put yourself in the devils shoes. You hate God and all of God's people. If your going to set out to destroy both, what and who do you attack? Now ask yourself which two groups of people on earth are constantly attacked? Buddhism? Nope...Hinduism? Nope...Quakers? Nope...Islam? Lol, just the opposite. These "religions" bear no threat to Satan. Guess who does, Christians and Jews(Gods chosen people). This is very simple to observe if you want to know the truth. When I heard this simple thought, I knew I was making the right decision.

I read a lot of quotes. Very practical stuff.

I never opine on my religious views without being prompted (specifically around family), but when asked, I am upfront and cordial. Luckily, I know enough scripture (that I actually like) to not make my grandmother go into cardiac arrest.

My mom puts God before everything.
I go back home at least once a month, and my kids almost always stay at my wifes parents since they drop everything they are doing to be with their grandkids for the weekend, while my mom is busy going to adoration, or singing in the choir at church which somehow doesn't count as going to church to her, or volunteering for something church related, or going to church.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any of this, but she chooses to do these things over spending time with her grandkids knowing they are only down for the day and she won't see them for a few more weeks.
She almost missed the birth of my first born b/c she was hosting some church event at her house, before my dad finally made her realize how retarded she was.
She will give any homeless guy money b/c she says "you never know if that guy is Jesus"
just stupid. She's closer to God, but moves further and further away from her kids and grandkids b/c of it.

the fricking Bible belt, I swear.
But hey, to each their own.

But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;
I've seen this misused a bunch of times. People like to hang their hat on it claiming the little guy will always beat the big guy. This is mainly to point out that God doesn't need our help with anything.
And pride doesn't just exist with the strong and wealthy. If you've heard of prosperity gospel, you need to know aobut poverty gospel. People who feel that the only way you can get close to God is to wallow in misery and poverty. This is equally wrong.

That is a very, very big consideration.

That's kinda what I'm going for in my post. Putting God above your own family is a bad thing and is some subtle form of child abuse.

I need to put God first more in my life. My faith is very important to me, but I easily let other things take away attention I should be placing on my relationship with God.
OP....I came to my faith later in life. Grew up believing in God....just conveniently didn't do anything about it(no church, no reading bible....just figured being a decent person and thinking a higher power was out there was good enough).

I usually try and refrain from the lunacy of religion threads....but, wow
this doctorine epitomizes what is wrong with religion

Then she's doing it wrong. You love God first and foremost, but there's plenty of scripture teaching us how to treat our families.
My wife has an aunt and uncle kind of like this. My MIL was driving her mother to the aunt and uncle's house and she needed food (I think diabetic), but they were at a revival service and weren't going to miss it for anything. And there was really no food in the house. Infuriated everyone. My wife and I are baptists, but she got a reall bad tase in her mouth about the denomination after that.

Lol naw I'm good.
People, who are big time believers, get really offended and are the least open minded people on the planet so I try not to get in any debate, especially the "faith" one. My girlfriend doesn't like talking about it at all. My parents know that I don't really believe any of it, but I would never tell my grandma about it. She would honestly have a heart attack.

Care to explain?
God and Faith isn't that complicated.

If following one's religion makes one a better, caring, kind, and thoughtful person - by all means, I don't care. Look at Mormons. Bat shite crazy theology, but some of the most genuine and good people I've ever met.
Love me some mormons too. Every female mormon I have met, I have fricked. Mormons are awesome in my book.

I love reading and discussing religion and faith. I really hope this becomes more acceptable on here. It is a really empowering experience to discuss faith and religion with others, but can sometimes be hard to discuss with people you are close to. That's why it is great to talk about on here.
I also consider myself to have a strong faith life, and I do try and use my faith ideals when making decisions. I don't exactly see myself as putting God before that of my loved ones here, but I don't think that is the point of "God first". I honestly feel like that just means keeping the teachings of God first and using the wisdom you can gain through God in your everyday life.

well no shite she's doing it wrong.
There's isnt' anything on this world that will ever come before my wife and my kids, and you shoudln't need a God or scripture to tell you that.
I'm not going down for Easter this year, just like last year, and she's goign to ask why again and I'll say, "well mom, you're miserable to be around on Good Friday b/c you treat the entire day like a funeral and put down everyone eating crawfish and being around family having fun. You're going to spend Saturday praying again and going to church again, and then there's the 2 hour mass on Easter Sunday. I'd rather spend the time at home with my kids playing with the one gift the fictitious easter bunny will bring them, and just enjoying life and family in general for the weekend instead of revolving my world around the death and resurrection of Jesus for 3 straight days for the 55th time. You are more than welcome to come visit us"

You are giving attributes and motives to a supernatural being of dubious authenticity. Believing the 'Devil' exists is a lot more to swallow than an omnipotent deity.

I don't belittle people off faith, it would make me no better than people of faith who judge non believers. My best friend a few years back was a pastor, awesome guy.
I think it's fascinating hearing about various religious/spirituality though.
