InDash android tablet as car headunit

This came up in the waze thread, so I figured I'd start a thread on it. Anyone else here have a setup like this?
I put a Verizon LG GPad in my dashboard for music, nav, obd II scanning, etc. and it's way better than any aftermarket headunit I've used.
I have the charger hooked to 12v accessory which triggers the tablet to unlock and launch the dashboard app. Streams audio to the factory ford sync system over bluetooth. Spotify for music, waze for navigation, and Google for anything else
Here's some pics

I'm bookmarking this thread. I have a bluetooth head unit right now, but I'm toying around with the idea of buying an older Nexus tablet (probably a 7 or 9) hooking it to a mifi, using google music for music abilities, obvious GPS capabilities, and hooking it to a backup camera.

This is next on my list. So far the only solution I have found is using an IP cam or another networked camera. It sucks because I have the factory backup cam that just uses an rca connector. If only tablets had a video in capability.

Does your tablet have a micro HDMI slot? You could maybe set up a RCA to HDMI connector, and then put that HDMI into a micro-hdmi connector.

It does but I'm 99% sure it's only an output port, not an input. I did find a usb video capture device, but I'm worried the video will have a delay.

Good point.
I wonder if they make bluetooth backup cameras, and if they do, would their be a delay?

Im going to have to buy a new head unit to do this because my current is so old it has no aux/bluetooth/usb capabilities. In order to wire up an aux port id end up spending roughly the same amount as a new reciever so ill probably just go that route.
Do you use one of those fm dongles? How do you interface with it? Im not sure how im going to handle regular radio if i dont have access to the headunit.
Also, what apps do you use to auto sleep and wake your tablet?

I haven't started my project yet, I'd ask CP3

Like I said, I reused the factory headunit, just hid it behind the dashboard essentially. I have an App for the tablet that talks to the cars computer to control volume, etc. Can even send the tablet a text to remote start the truck.
As far as wake/sleep, there is an app called tasker that will do certain actions for set events. I set it up to unlock when power is connected to the charger, and to go to sleep when power is disconnected.
Haven't tried those FM dongles, but I would assume they would work out fine. If thats the case, I would just come off the headphone jack of the tablet straight to an amplifier to the speakers. Eliminate a headunit all together

After watching videos of people using that dongle I just cant see that being a realistic solution. The lack of FM radio capability is probably going to keep me from doing this. Pretty bummed out haha. Spent all weekend running around trying to plan it out.

Purchased a Lenovo s8-50 today because it has a FM tuner built into it.
That being said. How do I go about rooting this thing? Any advice?

They do make Bluetooth cameras now

I would rather get an AppRadio for a cleaner, more straightforward install. Also, you don't have to worry about the batteries in the tablet crapping out over time.
There's also some cool custom mod support for hacking these to mirror your phone allowing access to home computer among many other features.

Or you can just get this pioneer with android auto.
But i like the idea of using the tablet. You can save a lot of money that way and customize with whatever apps you like.

Never had a problem with batteries dying. Driving to/from work is enough time for it to charge and not die for a week or so.
I went with the tablet for multiple reasons.
1) It was inexpensive and can get 4G LTE.
2) More customizable in my opinion
3) I have an app that interfaces with a micro controller. I have it wired up to a relay board as well as the CAN-BUS of the truck. With this I can use an app to send commands to the truck including remote start, AC controls, windows up/down...hell pretty much anything electronic can be controlled by sending the right command to the CAN-BUS.
Also with this I can sedn a text from anywhere i have service to the tablet to relay commands.
Basically I can control my truck with my Iphone now
