Auto Mechanic Board: Car Overheating?
Posted on 3/26/15 at 8:51 am

So I pull up in my driveway and I have obviously had a hose bust as it was whistling, fluid pouring onto my driveway, smoke billowing from under the hood, and my temperature gauge on hot as frick.
I have diagnosed it as an overheating issue. The car whisperer, I know. Didn't have time to mess with it further as I had to get to work.
My question is what now? Should I definitely have it towed somewhere? I know you can't drive on a hot engine as it will frick it up beyond repair. How much am I looking at here?
:(

Thermostat, fan clutch, water pump...? What kind of engine?

$25 if you diy
If it's a bust hose. But it sounds like you can't make that diagnosis.
It could be a cracked radiator, a bad waterpump.. etc. a couple of other things that could cause fluid and steam to escape, even a bad radiator cap.
Yes, you cannot drive a car that is currently overheated, but if you turn the heater on full blast, you could probably keep the car cool enough to drive it, unless you have a head issue.

Could be a number of different things... something major like a leak or something minor like a fuse.
I had a car once and the fan would randomly stop running. I found out that it kept blowing the fuse. After doing some checking under the hood I found that the car had once had an alarm system and someone took everything out. They cut all the wires but left them connected to the battery. The wires would hit metal, short out, blow the fuse for the fan, and the car would overheat.

Things like the year, make, model, engine, etc would be supremely helpful.

Well sounds like your hose busted so go get a new one. Problem solved. Hopefully your car had sensors that shut it down to overheating. Also after you replace the hose top off with antifreeze.
Eta: if it isn't just the bad hose it is what Im4LSU said.

Appreciate the responses. I'll try and see the exact cause of the leak when I get home.

sounds like the electric radiator fan quit working. Could be a bad fan, blown fuse or bad relay.

Ok, back home. I fired it up and what I noticed that there was a fan that would kick on then off every 15 or so seconds. I assume this is supposed to cool the engine as the car temp began rising as the fan wouldn't stay on?? If it's the fan, what was the liquid coming out this morning?

Thermostat........

Is there a way to definitively find that out myself? I'm not a car guy so trying to do as much as I can

Not being a smartass but if this question is being asked seriously you need to stop, call a tow truck, and have it towed to a mechanic.

If you don't know about this stuff then quit driving the vehicle and get it towed to a shop before you cause more damage.

Ok. Let the car cool down for a couple hours... Open radiator cap and fill with water... Crank engine and wait about 5 mins for car to warm up. Then look for any fluid leaking and where it is coming from.. Basically hoses. Water may come from under engine.. That would be the water pump... Finding where it is leaking is one thing. Fixing is another......

I'm not driving it. It's parked at my house and has been since this started. I know people that would help, so just trying to see what it is so I can maybe explain what they would be coming for. That's all

Filled radiator with water. Water looked to be coming from underneath. Fan kicks on then kicks off.

Did you check your headlight fluid? It might be low.
