An inside-the-park HR is in play, so I would think it should count toward BABIP. Then again, it's also a HR...

quick google search...

In the park Home Runs are not tracked separately from HR and would not be included in BABIP.
Neither Fangraphs, Baseball-Reference nor MLB have in-the-park-homers tracked and thus do not include it in their BABIP calculations.
As there are only a few each year, and the number is very small in relation to the total number of hits, at-bats and home runs, these are not really a factor in making BABIP unreliable.

Good. Because honestly i didnt really feel like adjusting my formula for Laird.

If for no other reason opposing teams/coaches are like frick this guy is their 9 hole?!
he sees a ton of fast balls toward the bottom of the lineup....foster is a great hitter but does strike out a little too much to be a 1 or 2 hole guy. he can mash fastballs but struggles with the curve. that's my main reason for it and it gives us extra life at the bottom of the order.

yeah screw that, i'm adjusting it going forward.
also one of my favorite stat nuances applies to LSU this year, a run that is earned to the player but not to the team so the totals don't appear to add up.
I LOVE THIS shite AND I MAY MOVE TO ENGLAND!

The rule is basically just a lie to the world. Congrats stat guys on being lazy...

Yep I learned about that scoring quirk a few years ago.

when i think about what babip is trying to measure it's how often you are hitting the ball hard somewhere when you put it in play. Obviously luck sometimes plays into it but luck usually evens out after awhile. However, to me taking HR's out of the equation is a bit counter intuitive.

Laird's BABIP goes from .402 to .409 with the HR included

You would expect Laird to have a higher than average BABIP because he is so fast and can outrun alot of infield balls that others cannot.

It has to do with the situation where a relief pitcher doesn't get the same benefit when it comes to errors leading to unearned runs. For instance, say a relief pitcher comes in with 2 outs in an inning. But earlier in the inning, there was an error that is making all the runs the starting pitcher gave up after 2 outs unearned. If the relief pitcher gives up a homer in that inning, it's charged as an earned run to the pitcher but an unearned run to the team.

So... Laird to cleanup?
Obviously. But we'll have to reassess after Friday night.

I disagree with the way this is handled. I have nothing else to add.
