quote:No, the travel ball winners all get rings now. The same people who are against every kid getting a trophy because they work hard and show up to every practice are now posting pictures all over for everyone to see Little Johnny with his 6 ft tall trophy and 1st place ring from a single weekend of playing.
Travel ball isn't exactly every kid gets a trophy format..

To be fair, that single weekend of playing is usually 5-7 games between Saturday and Sunday against some decent competition.

Not a dad either but i played both travel ball and in a public rec league in my youth. And yes we learned all of those things and executed them in games just like every other team we played. The rec league was much more like what you described. This probably varies locationally, I understand some rec leagues probably have great players and coaches, but i think it is safe to assume that parents who are willing to invest thousands of dollars in tournament fees and travel costs year round probably care more about teaching the sport than the 2 month rec league parents?

You would think that abut you are wrong. They just pay to play and fundamentals are not taught. The rec league/ travel ball you played is a completely different from now. I played rec/travel ball too but the advanced players got the fundamentals during travel ball and practice. Now you just play every weekend and thats it.

You know how I know you've never watched a 12 year old AAA or Majors team play baseball?
I think you're confusing Rec teams and Travel teams.

It is killing arms. Arms have no rest time. Arms used be used from Febuary through July then it would have a few months off until late Oct, November with light work to get ready for Febuary. Now arms are throwing 12 months and causes arm problems and weak arms when they get to the high school levels. I can tell that the average pitchers doesn't have near the velocity that they did just 6-8 years ago.
I played sports all year. I threw a football or baseball almost everyday as a kid. I believe the more you throw the stronger your arm will be. Long toss will definitely aid in strengthing arms.

I think yall are using the top 10% of travel ball teams to make an argument for all 100%.

You may be somewhat right about the All Star and AA teams, but the higher level teams are more polished than what you're giving them credit for. But I still disagree with you on just about everything else you posted.

You probably didn't throw with the same intensity as during baseball season.. The arm needs the long term rest and that why seasonal sports are best at the youth level.. The research is becoming pretty definitive on this.. Today's culture of year round travel ball is putting unneeded stress on youth arms.

No offense, but you couldn't be more wrong about this. I took my 9 year old son out of rec ball a few years ago to give him a better chance at learning the fundamentals of the game. Rec ball was daddy ball to us. I don't throw money around for him to play tournament ball either. I pay all of $600/year for him to play on his team and that covers the cost of tournament entries and uniforms. We travel from east Texas to east Louisiana.
Just this weekend, my son bunted on base 3 times (one for a double due to a throwing error).
We have friends that had their boys playing rec for the past few years who are just getting to play at the travel ball level at 9 years old and they are having a rough go of it, due to not learning the fundamentals and not having solid competition.

idk we played with tennis balls all day. Throwing as hard as we could...also wiffle balls. But I will say the only time my arm felt fatigued was after pitching....not sure if that was throwing curveballs or just the amount of pitches.

I threw what I thought was a nasty little curveball in my youth.. To bad my arm felt like it was about to fall off after throwing it during games.. Looking back, I'm pretty sure I was doing it wrong

These tournaments use "ring events" to promote themselves and entice teams to sign up. I don't really care about the kid getting a ring, it's the hypocrisy of it all that gets under my skin. And I won't even start on "We're going to the World Series!" b/c we can afford the entry fee.

We got a few of those around the house, but we don't care about those cheap arse rings. We love the fight and character that our boys show against worthy opponents. To fight back from a deficit or turn an incredible double play that even the other team's parents can appreciate is what it's all about.

That is why i preferred coming in as a closer...i could just throw fastballs. My arm never hurt. I would teach young kids FB and change up only.

Shouldn't be throwing spinners until at least 13-14. There is a reason that Tommy John numbers have skyrocketed the last 10 years. The violent snapping motion of a curveball and especially slider is too much for a young arm to handle.

My kid is forbidden to throw anything but FB and change ups. If he gets caught throwing anything else I'll make him sit. That pretty much goes for all the other kids on the team as well.
We count their pitches, we wont let any of them throw more than 65-70 pitches a weekend. Some throw even less.

that is the way to go. I had my growth plate slip out of place when throwing a curve at 13...hated pitching after that.
