jeff Ireland really has a hard on for this guy. Hopefully his salary cap hit is greatly reduced from restructuring.

i just saw where the Dolphins traded Mike Wallace and a 7th round pick to the Vikings for a 5th round pick.
this makes me feel better about the Stills trade honestly. I mean Wallace is a more established WR in the league yet we got a LB and 3rd round pick in our deal.
I liked Stills and all but I think if Ellerbe ends up being a solid contributor we'll win this trade.
you take Stills who was a 5th round pick and flip him for a 3rd rounder and a position of need? frick yeah!

I was calling for him here when he was a free agent. Mostly from him flashing in coverage when in Baltimore. He's a player I now wonder how much the quality of the rest of that defense made him look better.
And what a full hard on from Ireland. He must have pounded the table. Just read these rotoworld blurbs on Ellerbe...
The Miami Herald confirms Dannell Ellerbe will be the Dolphins' starting middle linebacker, replacing Karlos Dansby.

The Dolphins are using Dannell Ellerbe at outside linebacker during OTAs.
Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler are on the outside, with Koa Misi at Mike. In nickel packages, Wheeler and Misi stay on the field while Ellerbe departs. The Fins are essentially admitting ex-GM Jeff Ireland's $34.75 million mistake on Ellerbe, changing his position and demoting him out of sub-packages. Unfortunately, they can't save salary cap room by cutting Ellerbe until next offseason.

Dolphins placed SLB Dannell Ellerbe on injured reserve with a hip injury, ending his season.
Coming off a dismal 2013, the injury figures to end Ellerbe's time with the Dolphins. Handed a five-year, $34.75 million deal in March 2013, Ellerbe was among the worst inside linebackers in the league last season, and demoted out of sub packages this spring.
Ellerbe is already done for the season. He says the hip was "messed up pretty good" in Week 1, but he hopes to be ready for OTAs, though Ellerbe won't rush it. A big free-agent bust by ex-GM Jeff Ireland, Ellerbe is a prime candidate to be released in the spring

Ireland signed him to a $35 million dollar contract in Miami in 2013 and cut Karlos Dansby. There's your answer
They can't all draft Kadeem Carey

just saw how Mike Wallace makes almost 10 million a year? WTF.
I guess they were just happy to dump his arse but they must really see something in Stills. Stills is sure as hell cheaper but I guess they need to make plenty of room because they just signed Suh who command a lot of money.
an interesting day.
just trying to make more sense of this trade and sort of compare to the one the Dolphins made with the Vikings for Mike Wallace.
I remember Ellerbe being a name thrown around a lot after the Ravens won the Super Bowl a few years ago.

Spoiler alert, he's not very good.

NEWSFLASH we won a SB with Scott Shanle.

He's a really solid linebacker who struggled playing in a 4-3 system in Miami. He won a super bowl with Baltimore and started on the inside next to Ray Lewis that season. He's much more suited for this scheme. I think he'll wind up being a really nice player for us.

This is what a lot of people are missing. He switched to a different system in Miami. 3-4 ILBis very different from OLB or even MLB in a 4-3. Hell, we have a huge example of this on the Saints in Vilma but in the other direction. Also, the guy got one season and then got injured. The transition is tougher than most realize.

Just wanted to bump this and say I'm glad we got him...even for what he could play.

To me, he has been a disappointment here. Always seems to be hurt!!!

This was known when he came in. When he did play he was very solid. Ashame that he can't stay off the trainer's table, I think he could really help us going forward otherwise.

Love him. When he was in on defense you could find him easily. Some you didn't know were in the game or in the stadium.
Two big buts. Salary and injury.
Like Hightower he may try to get as much as he can anywhere or he may want to stay at a lower cost.
My best case scenario would be that he wants to stay, gets healthy and plays on a one year prove it contract.

The saints record is better with him in the lineup

I also thought his presence was known when in there. Talent is there but ya gotta stay on the field. Sean Lee even more talented, but the boys hafta be considering other options for the same reason.

He's a strong restructure candidate. Won't keep his rate that he had last season, but doesnt have a lot of leverage
