Only reason I ventured into ipa was that beer. And I know it's not an ipa.
If you're like me, you didn't know what an IPA was when you had your first Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I got it because I didn't like "dark beers", and I figured a "pale ale" would be easy to drink. I was surprised, but in a good way.

SN Pale Ale was so bitter to me the first time I had it. Thought my BIL was an idiot for drinking something that tasted so bad...

I don't keep up too much with whale hunting (don't want some green peacers attacking me as if I'm some kind of Jap), so not sure if there's hype surrounding this one. If there is I'd say it doesn't live up to it. Not to say it's not a good beer. Just has an indistinct element that's rather frustrating. Has to be the oak .. it definitely has a woody flavor and the finish is long on the arboraceousness. Would be curious to hear what some folks with a more discerning palate might think of it.

proper fricked. It starts like this and then you are the guy looking at dates on all the refrigerated bottles at the liquor store and bitching at the poor clerk because some of the ipas aren't in the refrigerated section.
SNPA is still a good beer. One great thing about it is that it is available almost everywhere. Bum frick WV gas station, there it is. Shitty bar in the middle of no where Indiana, they got it. Chilis in Hot Springs, Ar, damn straight they have it. Sierra Nevada doesn't make a bad beer.
Another classic that gets around is Anchor Steam. I remember when I was a young impressionable lad in 9th grade we stole a 6 pack of it my friend's dad. Our young Milwaukee's best palate wasn't ready for it and we thought it was the worst beer ever.

So it may or may not live up to the hype that may or may not exist?
Yes, is my answer.
