Make sure anesthesia does an interscalene block preop to control the early post op pain.
This, and ask about a catheter with a pump/ball vs a one shot. Use ice liberally, or ask your doctor or PT about a cold therapy machine (Breg Polar Care is a good brand, and even if insurance doesn't pay, they aren't expensive - great for sleeping). I'm a surgeon (not ortho) - this was my first experience as a surgical patient. I believe a large portion is mental - be realistic about the discomfort you will feel and focus on how much better you will be when it does heal. And I'm serious about the ice.

How did u get to the point of needing surgery? What was your original injury?
I hurt my shoulder last week and while X-rays say one thing, I haven't had a CT or MRI.
The docs say nothing else is wrong, But it don't feel right.
I guess the real question is what does a messed up rotator cuff feel like?

It hurts.... i've had a torn labrum since my juco days, never got it fixed. Thinking about moving forward with it soon, which is what i shouldve done when i worked in the field.
The thing that will tell you for sure that you have a tear or strain thats not obvious is an MRI. have fun in the tunnel

varying degrees of trauma, but it worsens over time from where it may hurt when you do certain things to constant, excruciating pain, sleep dep and loss of almost all function, seems like most people pick a point on that journey to where they can't go on and have it done, I regret putting mine off

I had it done in 2002. Take your pain medication after surgery because if you let it lapse, you will hurt. Do your physical therapy or you will get frozen shoulder. The rest is just getting used to using your other hand. I have had good results since the surgery but don't do military presses or any overhead weight training.

I was playing a lot of tennis and golf. I tore it trying to hit a golf ball out of deep rough. It hurt in the back of my shoulder and when I raised my arm above my head. Initially it was throbbing and uncomfortable and then just evolved to being irritating. It didn't really keep me from doing anything, but after some physical therapy I had an MRI and realized I had a few tears. The doctor told me I didn't have to have surgery, but that it was never going to get better without it. I elected to do it and I'm glad I did.

Mine hurts like hell whenever I raise my shoulder.

I still have a torn labrum in my left shoulder (self diagnosed as I tore my right labrum and had surgery) and I can't sleep with my left arm under my pillow (shoulder dislocates) and my shoulders are too weak for a lot of upper body exercises but surgery would have such a small improvement that it's not worth the trouble.

Use the game ready ice machine.

dont do it unless you have seen the X-rays and you are convinced nothing else will help you.
demand physical therapy if you have not received it for a long time.

X rays won't show you anything. MRI does

Got rotator surgery in college. Had a lot of problems with nerves and numbness in the middle of the night while trying to sleep. Had those problems for years. Got shot overseas a few years ago with an entrance wound thru the shoulder blade and an exit right thru the shoulder joint.
Total shoulder replacement. No more numbness. Recovery sucked.

disagree, I used to be the badass that would live with pain because I would never play a certain level of whatever again, what a load of horseshite, do it for quality of life

Recovery does suck. I had to have a follow up surgery and for 23 days I spent 8 hours a day in the contraption below while it moved and stretched my arm. also attended PT 3 days a week. All good now, and I'm glad I had the surgery, but I regretted it for the fist 4 months.

He is right. My Doc advised against surgery, I chose surgery. Now, I am 2 years out and every day I am FULLY aware that I have had shoulder surgery on my shoulder. Even after rehab I am on a 30 lb weight restriction. I havent had the issue since I cut 8 inches off my head, but my shoulder burned like fire just putting shampoo on my head in the shower.
