Looking to possibly buy a new or slightly used 40-50 HP tiller handle motor for a flat. Whats the best brand to go with for quality, fuel efficiency, and price?

Also check the horse power rating on your boat, most of the time they lower the HP rating of the boat if you are using a tiller handle motor.

Will definitely have power trim and electric start. Im a comfort type of guy
As far as HP rating, i will most likely have custom boat built to the rating of the motor i buy

They're all the same these days. Go with a brand you trust and it will be fine.

with one HUGE difference...
mercury tillers have shift on the handle, everything else has a shift lever on the motor
not a huge deal when you are running one place to another, but if you are using it to hunt, fish, run traps/lines/etc it makes all the difference in the world

I had a '97 40hp Yamaha 2 stroke on a 16-48 Polar kraft. Boat would fly with me in it alone. Did really well with me, my 400lb buddy and a hunting load too.

Sounds like I would be looking at a Mercury.

The Tohatsu have them too. They also have 2 stroke models (TLDI)

Yamaha 4 strokes also have the shift lever on the tiller handle.

Can't go wrong with a Yamaha.
Polar Pop, I didn't catch your post the other night about the river until the next day. I was down there yesterday (Pool 4). Caught 15 or so, best 5 weighed just shy of 14 lbs. This coming weekend should be on fire.

I think he was strictly saying that Merc's have the dirtbike style shift and throttle all in one function (one-handed) while with the levers you still have to use your other hand to shift the lever.
vs
I'm thinking that for engines above 15hp or so that they are all now incorparating the shift lever though. I had trouble finding a larger merc engine with an all in one tiller throttle
