punk is suing for 5 million
The comment section is alleging his mother needs the money to cover her gambling habits. This story isn't going away for a while.
quote:
The mother of Brady Becker, the 17-year-old who was punched repeatedly by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy during a February arrest that was captured on video, has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
The teen's lawyer had announced that a lawsuit was in the offing in the days after the Feb. 13 scuffle in a parking garage at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie following a Carnival parade.
Nicholas Breaux, the deputy seen punching Becker on the video, Deputy Cory Porche, Sheriff Newell Normand and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office are named as defendants in the lawsuit, which seeks damages "in excess of $5 million."
The lawsuit states that Becker, identified by the initials "B.B." because he is a minor, suffered a damage to his left eye and a fractured cheek bone after Breaux punched him in the face repeatedly.

I agree, but $5M...damn not sure a judge and jury will agree with that much money...they should have just tried for $1m and walked away.

I mean, they could say whatever they want in the lawsuit. JPSO is gonna lose, no doubt.
What if they say that cops are now following them around and harassing them, and they are scared enough to move?
If Newell would've nutted up and fired the guy quickly, publicly, that would've reduced the chances of this lawsuit happening by a lot

Sure, these people are definitely reasonable. That's why they're suing for $5 million.

They're dumb for doing that.
The cop used excessive force, Ray Charles could see that, but $5M is ridiculous.
The kid'll get 25K, the cop will stay on th force, and JPSO's liabilty rates will rise exponentially.
Everybody wins except the taxpayers.

I mean, everyone saw what happened and know the guy's history. Fire him and lambaste him on TV and people would be more behind the dept on the issue. Being proactive and retroactive at the same time. The police union obviously took the helm on this one, and we're gonna have to pay for it while they get to keep collecting dues for protecting one d-bag

All of this started because the undercover douche arrested a kid for smoking a joint. frick the system, and the officer. Hilarious if they get taken for 5mil.

Always go for more and settle in the middle.

These people were never not going to sue. You're just kidding yourself to think otherwise.
I think VetteGuy is right on point with his analysis of the situation.

You are forgetting that they will sue in a court and someone will decide what they get. No matter how much you want to deny it, the judge will take into account JPSO's actions after
If the whole thing would've been squashed by JPSO doing the right thing quickly, they probably wouldn't have sued for so much. It is more of a perception thing. If the family perceives that they have gotten what is theirs (cop's job and a small settlement), they wouldn't have to now go after the parish and take more to prove a point.
If I were in their shoes, I would originally go after the cop's job + no money. If I couldn't have that, I'd go after the cop, parish, and lakeside for money. I'll take as much as I can get then. They've already paid out based on this douche cop's actions before. Allowing him to continue beating people = lots more money and shows negligence

I know the mom and family pretty well. I didn't know of her having a gambling problem.
I do know the sheriff's arse is against the wall and he is fighting for his job. And they have him in at least one Big arse Lie.

How exactly did you determine I forgot this? And where did you come up with that second sentence?

I would love to knel how you know this.

I wish I could beat someone up, face no legal ramifications, keep my job and any civil suits brought against me would be paid by someone else.

That's an absolutely fantastic description of what happened. You didn't leave out any details at all.

All the details are in the thread...you want more, go read them.

However this plays out, next Carnival season, expect to see a LOT of arrests of teenagers at parades. There will be no more "letting it slide" or multiple warnings. No, you do something wrong and you will be gently arrested. Why?
While this spun out of control, maybe it was because the cops have let some things slide simply because it's Mardi Gras and you can't arrest everyone. In the past, the public and the police had this understanding. But every single thing up to the four punches indicated that the public (the teenagers) had crossed the line as far letting the police do their job, and verbally abusing them.
As for the incident itself, that is for the courts to decide.
But expect next year, there will be zero tolerance. Jump in front an opposing schools band next year, there will be no warning, you're going to jail. Drinking a beer under 21. Getting an MIP. Any mouthing off will result in resisting arrest.
And I can't say that I blame the police. People are focusing on the four blows, and yes, they were over the top. But that case will be settled. What bugs me is the increased lack of respect by teenagers (future adults) with police. I'm much more worried about the public-police understanding.
The kid and family will probably win, and then the question is, what then. Will others think they can mouth off against cops? I think that you will always have rogue cops, but 90% of the others are good, hard working guys who risk their life every day.
It's because of this impending lawsuit that I think we will see an entirely different Metairie Mardi Gras next year. A lot of parents better teach their kids right or they will be bailing them out of jail or paying so hefty fines. Just remember, cops could legally arrest a LOT more people at a parade than they currently do. They give out a lot of warnings to lawbreakers. Next year will be interesting.

You're smoking crack if you think anything is gonna change. There is no reason to be arresting little kids who are drunk and mouthing off. There definitely isn't a reason to have your wannabe MMA stars beating them
Do you know that this happened in Metairie and not New Orleans at "carnival"?
