Never been but in a few weeks I'm going for a few days to hangout, knock around, etc. Staying over a weekend. Hear it is cool town but what do the TD locals or travelers recommend? Prefer local stuff over touristy if that makes sense.

Lived there for a couple of months. Definitely hit up Sixth Street at least once if you're into bar hopping. Other than that, most of the city is "local". It's very different than what I was used to in south Louisiana. There are obvious tourist areas, but it's not a corporatized city.

Interesting. Are people making pilgrimages to it?

I don't think many Austin people know where the cemetery is located, much less that Chris Kyle is buried there. That might have changed since the last time I visited, in fall 2014. He's buried next to former Texas football coach Darrell Royal and former Longhorn quarterback James Street.

In b4 aggies squall and shite on this thread.

6th street is always fun. West 6th is more of a party crowd, East 6th is a nicer. Beer exchange is a cool bar on East 6th

I suggest kayaking from one end of Lady Bird Lake to the other and then back

It's about 11 miles

Good suggestion. The gf and I rented paddle boards and went out there. It gets pretty peaceful out there.

Check here for music

Go eat at the Salt Lick (BYOB and cash only)

Bat's are not out now, but they are under Congress St Bridge

Top Golf

Pedernales State Park is not that far and has waterfalls and beautiful scenery

Swim in Barton Springs Pool

Congress St (Just south of DT) is cool to walk around and shop

If you're into craft beers their are plenty of breweries and draught houses to go to

Stubbs, The Moody Theater, Continental Club, Empire Control Room are my favorite places to see bands

Rainey St

Was there last week. Had the kids along so our agenda may be different but;

bats won't be there until April. Maybe a few earlier, but no show until April.

Top Golf was fun. They have radiant heaters above you so even on a cold day, still fun to hit balls and drink beer.

6th street was fun.

We road out to The Oasis restaurant on like Travis. Touristy but nice view and good food.

Hula hut for more of a drinking experience.

The Segway tour of downtown was interesting. Some liked the tour and the others likes playing around on the segways

Barton springs was interesting to see.

There is a cave system near austin. It was on our list, but we didn't ever get to it.

There's so much to do there... You really need to have about 4-5 days to really experience the city. I've been at least for a week every month for the past 6 months. I still find things I haven't done. Can't wait to make the move out there next weekend.

South congress is fun and quirky.

Home slice pizza is probably the best pizza I have ever had.

Go get BbQ. Franklins if your willing to do the wait. But Muellers in East Austin never really has a line and the BBQ and sides are great.

Towne lake do the paddle boards if weather is good. Mount Bonnell is worth a stop too.

West 6th is much better than east 6th. I was in Austin in December and I was surpised how much east 6th has turned into bourbon street. West 6th is nicer bars and better scenery. The ranch is a great place.

Lamberts is great too.

Rainey St is cool if its not raining. Otherwise go to west 6th if you are over 25. Kung Fu Saloon, Ranch 616, J Blacks.

For a cool vibe.. Head to the Domain up North. Nobody ever mentions it. The Eastside on the other side of I35 between 4th-7th st is cool if you are a hipster. If you are young and want to hit up e.6th Blind Pig is always a good choice. Strip clubs.. Perfect 10 is far but worth it. Otherwise just go to Palazio. Its close to Downtown. Hula Hut is a great late afternoon starter. Pick up the Chronicle if you are in the mood for live music. It has it all.
