im a normal married guy with 2 kids and we go to church most sundays, go to sunday school, etc.
ive always wanted to sit down with my pastor and just bounce some questions off him about religion and Christianity in general.
have you ever been curious if religion is just a way for people to feel comfortable and at peace?
ive just wondered if we throw around the terms fate and miracle too much when in reality its just luck and being in the right place at the right time, etc.
why does God allow innocent people to die everyday?
I hate when people say it was "there time to go" or "god was calling them home". so when I see on the news the 4 year old that was kidnapped and beaten to death it was "their time to go" according to God?

Never question it. Watch 700 Club as much as possible. Don't believe in dinosaurs.

Considering religion is mostly made up, you should question it.

I believe in magic underwear.

If I can be bold.
If you are questioning it, you need to find another church or just get out.
This is a variant of the "Why do bad things happen to good people?" question. The answer is simple.
It only happened once. And he volunteered for it.
True belief in the absolute sovereignty of God is a peace that is indescribable.
Disclaimer: Calvinist, not Catholic, with a seminary degree. I believe that Baptists and Baby Boomers have done more damage to this country than anyone.
My job is not to convert the OT. If you don't believe in God, that's fine. My take is that if there isn't a God, I've wasted a lifetime, and I'm okay with that. But if there is a God, non-believers have wasted more than a lifetime. But that's for them to be okay with.

Of course, I do all the time. One can only grow in their faith if they question it and challenge it. I highly advise you to sit down and have a philosophical discussion on religion and ask these questions to a good priest.
Another great person to discuss this stuff with is the Jesus Talks guy that hangs out in Free Speech Alley at LSU. He's a very open-minded wise man who enjoys such discussions and is always there to listen.

Just be happy. Don't worry about shite that you can't change. If you want to pray to give thinks for what you are blessed with then do it.

How would he know more than anyone on this planet? We are all created equally. We all have no idea.

I feel guilty feeling this way. its just as I get older and more educated it just feels weird to me.
I have a bible thumper southern Baptist friend and he gets all biblical on me every once in a while and recently he was telling me how hes not drinking anymore and porn is bad and hes not cussing because jesus wouldn't approve.
I mean seriously does he believe this shite? whatever helps him sleep better at night.

It's a coping mechanism for most people, to help them rationalize things in their life and why they happen. If it helps them, fine.
I also think that in olden times it was a way to control people. If you have expansive borders and no way to make sure your people are staying loyal and being good, you simply tell them that if they do bad stuff, they'll go to some fiery place for eternity.

I realize this, just want another opinion from someone who has studied theology
questions like, if we all go to heaven, where do muslims and hindus and Jews go?
why did Jesus appear when he did and only live 33 years? what about the cavemen 30,000 years ago? did they go to heaven?

No motherfricker I don't and if I did the first question I'd ask is why God made you.
But really why?
But really why?

You should always question it. Religion is a man made invention. That doesn't mean there isn't a God, but Religion is man's (usually ancient man's) attempt to explain and define an imperceptible superior being, so let's just say there's a chance it's not 100% accurate.
Regarding your kids, a religion that aligns with your personal values can be helpful. Just don't shove anything down their throats or they'll resist the lessons you hope they will learn. When they get older they can figure out what they believe for themselves.
