You never watched The Beverly Hillbillies? Granny Clampett frequently referred to The War of Northern Aggression and The War B'twix The States. "Civil War" has some ugly connotations!

What do you mean "would have"? Most people I know still label them as cowardice traitors to the crown.

So some of your Yankee ancestors invaded the South, and now you're telling us what term to use to describe the invasion? Thanks, but no thanks.

Okay, Sesch. I'll grab my Springfield, you get your Enfield, we'll meet at the Hornet's Nest and settle this war once and for all!

During the long build up to the American Revolution, the majority of American colonists wanted nothing to do with secession. By the mid-1770s, roughly a third of the population was for independence, a third were Loyalists and the rest didn't even want to be involved in the argument.

I'm well aware of how tepid the support was for the revolution. Washington and his troops damn near starved at Valley Forge, even as the local farmers sold abundant winter stores to the British.

"We" eventually won, so Sam Adams and his cohorts are now know as patriots. However, if they had lost, they would have been branded as treasonous rebels.

Correct. So let's look at what was being fought for: the south was fighting to keep it's precious chattel slavery in place.

Lets just say - Big Scrub - that it is okay to admire the elan and bravery displayed by the CSA in a lost cause.

Sure, it's "OK"...but why waste one damned second on such a thing? The crowd depicted in the video is a perfect example of people going out of their way to celebrate, learn more about, memorialize, etc. events of 150+ years ago...but do you care to guess what their reaction would be to read the new lynching report from last week? I'm sure that would be "how long do we have to keep talking about this" and all of the typical avoidance that seems to magically pop up re such things.

While I agree with their higher ideals - of state sovereignty - the stain of slavery and the unfortunate devolvement into violence (neither side had clean hands on this - it is the stronger argument that, by the time Lincoln was inaugurated, the South was itching for a fight - wrongheaded and self-destructive as that was) continues to make this a murky issue, rather than a cut and dried one.

It's cut and dried: they fought for chattel slavery.

You can choose to forget the atrocities committed on our women and children by the hated Yankee if you want too but me and mine will never forget.

And there were no slaves in the colonies in the 1770? Why did Lincoln wait until 1863 to issue the Emancipation Proclamation? Why did it only free slaves in the states that were "in rebellion"? Why weren't slaves freed in Maryland and Delaware?

Now wait just a cotton picking minute, mister. It was about state's rights (one of those rights just happened to be the ability to own a slave).

Much like the gay marriage issue of today. The Feds are going to legalize it across the board, book it. But our country was not set up that way by the founding fathers.

The current legalization of marijuana movement is how it is supposed to work.

Calling it the war of northern aggression is ridiculous, but whittling the reason of the Civil War down to slavery is just as ridiculous.

Go read a fricking book.

Give it up, Billy Bob. The war is over, you and your side got your asses handed to you and surrendered in defeat.
