FWIW,
An LG ($600 - $700)is the top rated top loader according to Consumer Reports. But it worth pointing out there isn't a very large discrepancy with the highest rated to the lower rated ones tested.

another plus that LG first came out with and other makes followed. Front loaders all have a coin and junk catch. Most of these fill up with crap and cause a service call to be needed. LG and Samsung and the germans started making it so that the customer could clean this themselves without paying $150 for the repair. IF you do get a front loader, only get one with an access door for the coin catch.

(Or don't because I love how simple and quick that money is on our end)

Yup, I'm seeing that they are a lemon. They had the best reviews when I bought them though.

The $250 price can from Maytags website. It was the only place I looked. I'm not totally sure that's what wrong though, it's my best guess since it got covered in water and was plugged in at the time. Nothing smells burned though.

Model is medb850wq0, I believe.

With the bearing going out and possibly the control panel had, it might be time to cut my losses and just get a new one. I don't care about matching sets, I love the dryer. Just don't I is if I want to fix it or dump money in it.

I love my LG front loaders. No problems with them so far. I open that filter/catch thing every few months and never find but a few hairs. Strange because my dog sheds a ton but I don't worry about it, ha.

ETA: I've used that Estate line at an apartment a couple times. It's terrible. May last a while but it's really quite shitty.

As far as washers/dryers - this advice came from a friend that owns an appliance store.....always buy 'middle of the road' never the cheap or the "heavy duty". Usually heavy duty unit have a larger drum but the same size motor as the middle of the road one.

same company, but different visions, as you can suspect innovations can lead to failures, while Maytag generally fixes issues found before, the Bravos system has been ripe with flaws

is the centennial line better than the bravos?

If you ever have the chance to physically "touch and feel" a Meile appliance , you will understand the pricing.

Stayed in a condo this summer with Meile washer and dryer. The washer was so quiet that you had to look at the lights to determine if it was running. The controls and the doors seemed well engineered. I was impressed.

I'm actually in the market for a new washer and dryer.

I have been looking a lot at the Maytag Bravos and Whirlpool Cabrio lines. I essentially have no idea what I'm doing.

Trying to stay under $600 for the washer.

Napoleon, you seem like you're very knowledgeable on the topic. I'm looking for a new top loading set in gray or metallic. Know anything about the below model? TIA

I know more about failures than about what's good and new.
That is a decent machine, but it uses the bravos drive system. Now that system is updated and the parts that failed in the past are gone.
If it carries the long term Maytag warranty on the motor (rotor stator) than it's probably fine as the cracking on the rotor is all I would worry about and I was hearing that now has a 10 year warranty.
The bearings do seem to fail after about 5-6 years though ($275 repair not that bad)

What matters most to you?

Longevity? Get the cheapest Whirlpool branded unit you can get. Ingels, Roper, Amana --- etc

Looks? Get a Korean unit but won't be under $600

Cabrio is confusing because they use that system in multiple units.

When I call a cabrio a lemon, I am referring to the Oasis/Bravos platform Cabrio, which means nothing to the consumer as it's a Whirlpool internal designation.
Most new Cabrios are the VMW or Verticle Modular Washers. Most of these are really good units now.

then you have direct drive which is rotor stator and belt drive.

Each has it's pluses and minuses.

The 2015 Whirlpools have the largest tubs ever installed in standard top loaders, which is a plus.

(just going over my notes from my last Whirlpool class in February- lol)

The best news is they got rid of the floating tub, which also caused a high fail rate in the Bravos and Cabrio lines.
So it does seem that the problems that those lines had, has been fixed.

The under $600 models will be belt drive, but that is still fine.

again, I don't see showroom new stuff all the time, I just know design elements to avoid.

Yep, still uses old technology, analog timers and direct drive units with rebuild-able transmissions.

Starting to lean toward this one if it is in fact the newer 2015 model like you described.

Having trouble finding a place that has the Roper in stock. Home Depot has the Amana on the website for cheap.

It does offer a 10 yr warranty on the drive motor and wash basket. I did contact Maytag because I could not find that model number on their website and they reiterated what you said; it's a brand new unit (1-7-15 release) with updated parts. I'll probably pull the triggers on these then. Thanks again.

Currently have a Whirlpool set from the late 80's or early 90's that I got off Craigslist about 7 years ago. Never had an issue until recently. I think the motor on the washer is going out as it seems to get stuck on the spin cycle. I have to lift the lid up and then back down to get it to reengage the spin cycle... it's weird. Been solid for $100 set though.

They appear to have the same features and probably come off the same Whirlpool assembly line. The 2 tenth cu ft difference is negligible. I'm a little skeptical because neither offer you independent water level control but they imply in description they have option to use plenty of water based on soil level. If those are my two choices, I would buy whichever one I can get delivered and hooked up for the least amount of money. I would certainly recommend either of these machines over the top load high efficiency models without agitators.
