I need to rant quickly about windows 8

Dude in the office just brought in his laptop to see if I could fix it...full of god knows what from installing toolbars etc. I have some items that won't uninstall so I reboot the machine and start pounding on f8 to get to safemode and see if I can uninstall it that way.
But...f8 no longer works to bring up the boot options, instead I have to look up how the frick to get into safemode on windows 8. "hold shift while pressing the restart button" I read. So I do it, and then the reboot starts and a menu pops up and I have to click through like 5 or so options before FINALLY finding safe mode. And then the fricking computer reboots again and asks me if I want to boot in to safe mode...
frick YOU MICROSOFT. I've hit f8 for 15 fricking years.
Thanks for listening

Ha. I had to figure this out today as well.

I had to google it the first time I worked on one. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that windows 8 boot too fast for the 'f8' prompt. I could be wrong though.

Same. Especially with SSDs now. There's about a half second window.

Probably also has to do with the fact that PCs that come with Win8 probably also use UEFI instead of BIOS but that's just speculation.

Partially right, because some UEFI-based boards have disabled this by default even for Win 7. But mostly it's because Microsoft completely disabled it in Win 8 in favor of the unified advanced boot options/recovery UI.
You can reenable the F8 boot menu function by running an elevated command prompt and entering:
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

There is a script you can run to allow you to own the file and you can then delete it. Uninstall until something else needs to be deleted.
