Jeep jamborees- anybody ever participated?

I've never done any kind of organized trail ride and this year's seasonal registrations are open. I'm thinking about doing a couple this year. If you've done one or many, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the experience. In particular- what are the people that participate like? Is it a fun atmosphere? Kid friendly?

A buddy of mine does them all the time and he's been trying to get me to go. I'm thinking about taking him up on his offer this year

I went to a couple of them for TTORA, and there are a lot of tools there mixed in with a few cool people. Was kid friendly (bbq, bonfire, etc). We never had more than 30 people though

I've been to a bunch. They are kid friendly. I find the jeep guys are more the hipster crowd and the Land Cruiser guys are more down to earth.

I've been on a couple and they are fun. If you get in a large group it tends to move slowly. They are kid friendly and the people I've meet generally are really nice and down to earth.
Bring some tools with you just in case.

Jeep jamborees are boring as shite. The one done in La is in St Francisville on the Daniel's property. Its basically a ride through the woods. If you want good trail riding in La, go to Sicily island. If you want the best in the south, go to hot springs. If you like mudriding, I got nothing for ya since that shite sucks

I've ridden in the one in St. Francisville around 6 times and always enjoyed it.

Sicily is awesome
It's cool, but so small.
Have they made any new trails in the last few years?

Yes. We went about a month ago

Nice.
Do you still have to camp outside of the property or can you camp inside now?

If you really want the best, go to Tellico in Western NC, eastern TN.

We camped inside in the set of pines by the lookout or whatever it's called

i'll be there in march. its by far the best within a 7hr drive
edit: although, i think this is out of the realm of what dlauw is looking to do.
jamborees are more for getting a group together and getting your tires dirty and riding through the woods.

ones i'm thinking of attending:
22nd Cajun April 30 St. Francisville, La
27th Palo Duro May 14 Amarillo, Tx
28th Ouray September 3 Ouray, Co
2nd Ozark October 1 Ozark, Ar
26th Ouachita October 15 Hot springs, Ar
17th Moab October 22 Moab, Utah
seems all the summer events are in the north. obviously i can't make all the ones in October. i always like to go with an experienced group the first time i go somewhere new.
my experience is limited to central and east texas trails and not of the park or dedicated kind so going with a group of people i don't know is a new experience.

While I'm not a fan of most of the people, La4x4 is the most organized group in the state.

Yes. Ive been to several. However, you'll need to get out of Louisiana and head to the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina or Virginia to do some real crawling. Everything in the deep south is mud which is boring as hell. Look up Rausch Creek in Pennsylvania--its probably the best place I've gone jeeping.
