I was making my first gumbo a few months ago and a good number of the recipes called for tomatoes, including Alton Brown's. I didn't use them in my gumbo, but it seems more prevalent than some on here are acting like.

We do put tomatoes in our seafood and okra gumbo ( not in chicken and Andouille ) but not in the manor described.
