In the OB's opinion what is the most affordable "easily customizable" .308...... Will be used strictly for backyard target shooting... Basically a "Fun to shoot Gun"

Literally any savage. Their actions are amongst the easiest to mess with as well as their barrel nuts.

For something different you might look at the Thompson Center (owned by S&W) Dimension rifles, setup to do caliber changes. I know a couple of people who have TC bolt rifles, the action is smooth, good shooters, but nothing wrong with Savage either, esp if you are a lefty.

Springfield M1A although it doesnt exactly fit your criteria of affordable.

Go find you an old beater 700adl out of a pawn shop, strip it down and go to town with whatever you think you would want to put on it.
The possibilities are endless and affordable
The Remington 700 is the "small block chevy" of the gun world.
Good luck

I picked up a .30-06 version, filled the stock with 10A silicone and it makes a serious improvement to the balance of the rifle. Probably added close to a lb with 400ml fill volume. They weigh more than the 6.25lbs Ruger claims, mine is over 8lbs with no glass. Now just need to pick up a scope for it....

i got this rem 700 AAC-SD a couple of months ago for $630. 20" threaded barrel and hogue rubberized stock. not crazy about the stock, but I'm taking the action out of this rifle for a complete custom build.
there are a handful of drop in triggers that are available and endless stock/ chassis systems ranging from $300-$$1,700. it is a very easy gun to work on yourself, I've already put a timney 510 1.5lb trigger in this one

Tiddles which timney trigger did you get? I noticed there are a few different kinds. Going this route instead of the recall

Hey MS the 700 takes a Timney 510 in black or a 512 in stainless an excellent upgrade over the x-mark and are easily changed within minutes, I put a 512 in my stainless sps and couldn't be happier with my hunting rifle.

Not to hijack here, but what's the advantage of the nickel in the 512 v 510?
Where do y'all keep your break at?
x-mark is factory at 3.5# i believe...

Looks only to me, the functionality is the same, I like the nickel finish against the Bell & Carlson stock I swapped out with.
It might be a little more impervious to the weather at most.
I set mine to consistently break at 2.5lbs

Why would you pay for the stock if all you wanted was the action? Could have pulled that mug out of any model 700
